We are looking for people with a "Can do Attitude" to come and join our bank portering team at Scunthorpe General Hospital who can work on positive Covid-19 areas.

You will receive full training for the role of a porter and FIT training in the use of personal protective equipment.


The role of a porter can be demanding, and requires flexibility to support us during periods of operational pressures, so if you believe you have the physical agility to conduct patient, equipment and material moves around the hospital site, and can demonstrate our values,Kindness, Courage and Respectwe would like to hear from you.


Your role will involve working within a team to provide a high quality Porter Service which offers a timely, responsive and pro-active system for the movement of patients, materials and equipment within the Site and undertake a number of other specified support and ancillary tasks as per the requirements of the service.

Your role will assist the service in providing an efficient, flexible and customer focused porter service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week across all sites, which will provide a comprehensive, planned and reactive Porter Service that is reliable, helpful, efficient and responsive to the needs of Patients, Trust staff and visitors.


You will accept and undertake work allocated through the task management system using a hand held device, which will involve such tasks as patient movement, distribution, stores, furniture, equipment, pharmacy, meals, pathology items, blood products, waste, movement of deceased, confidential waste, post and laundry around the Hospital site as required.


There is a 6-8 week training period where you will be expected to be available to work Monday to Friday, various shift hours covering 24 hours.

Duties and responsibilities of the post holder

Main Duties

  • Accept and undertake work allocated through the task management system using a hand held device
  • Convey and move patients and medical notes, by wheelchair, trolley, bed, etc, which would include assisting clinical staff in PAT sliding of patients where applicable
  • Communicate effectively with Patients, staff and colleagues
  • Collect and delivery of linen, refuse, clinical waste, food trolleys, stores, beds, bedding, furniture, confidential waste and equipment to designated area.
  • Sort and distribute incoming/outgoing mail and franking of external mail
  • Receive and move medical gas cylinders, change medical gas cylinders and manifolds in line with training and Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Convey and distribute pharmacy items around the site
  • Convey deceased patients to the Mortuary and receive BIDs directly into the Mortuary through liaison with the emergency service
  • Support any Trust emergencies, incidents or events where required supporting the contingency and operation of the Hospital.
  • Contribute to the delivery of government targets and Trust initiatives including changes to legislative requirements, ensuring that the Trust's policies and procedures are maintained.
  • Comply with all mandatory and additional training requirements.
  • Build working relationships with colleagues at all levels of the organisation
  • Work closely with your Team and Team Leader to review and improve the performance of the service
  • Escalate any issues to your Team Leader
  • Participate in an annual PADR.
  • Attend departmental meetings/briefings.
  • Undertake Supervisory duties as and when required to cover absence.
  • Carry out daily vehicle checks and record on check sheet and report any defects.
  • Driving, cleaning, refueling and maintaining records of the hospital vehicles and delivery of goods and equipment as required.
  • Carry out all porter duties as service needs demand in accordance with the Porter manual and Standard Operating procedures
