An exciting opportunity has become available to work as A Homeless Relief Officer.

This is an opportunity to join a busy, fast paced and established team working within the wider Housing Options service at Cheshire East Council.


About the role


The team work in accordance with the housing legislation and provide a key role in preventing and relieving homelessness and rough sleeping.

As a Homeless Relief Officer you will be assessing applicants whom you have reason to believe are homeless, or threatened with homelessness, to establish what duties are owed by the local authority.


This will involve speaking to homeless applicants from a variety of backgrounds, some with complex needs, completing and recording thorough homeless assessments via phone and / or face to face, providing applicants with bespoke housing advice and assistance, where applicable providing applicants with interim / emergency accommodation, writing and serving legal decision letters, amongst other related tasks.

The role will also require you to partake in the Out of Hours rota, which is shared amongst the team.

The role is 5 days a week, Monday - Friday. The team are currently hybrid working on a 50/50 split. The team are based over two locations, Macclesfield and Crewe, and work from both offices.

About you

You will have:

  • A background in housing / homelessness or a profession with transferrable skills set.
  • Great computer literacy and IT skills, including Microsoft Office and Teams.
  • Great organisational and investigative skills.
  • The ability to work on own initiative and selfmotivation.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to communicate professionally with clients from a variety of backgrounds, some with complex needs.
  • The ability to communicate with other professional agencies and work with a positive multiagency approach.
  • Knowledge of the Locata housing system would be advantageous but not essential.
