Description

The post holder will be responsible for the development of a programme aimed at supporting young people to plan, deliver and evaluate a range of community projects.


Our development areas will be:

  • Building a caring mentoring and befriending relationship programme.
  • Youth leadership and development support.
  • Support for young people's health, fitness & wellbeing.
Facilitating and supporting regular youth engagement projects, youth bank, health, and fitness programme.


The person appointed will be responsible for setting up and coordinating the project which aims to enhance skills in self-management and behaviour control through mentoring and befriending, leadership, multi-sports, advice and guidance sessions and team working activities.

The main aim of the project is to support young people to make informed decisions, providing them with an increased sense of control over their own lives, encouraging them to feel more positive about themselves and future opportunities


Main Duties & Responsibilities
To create working conditions in which young people can have fun participating in community projects.

To support young people to identify and appreciate learning outcomes from their experiences.


To create working conditions in which young people feel safe, secure, and confident enough to take control of their own activities, feeling valued for their knowledge and experience.

To carry out face to face work to develop and support the work of the youth forum

To co-ordinate training programmes for young people and ensure learning outcomes are met

To provide one to one support to young people participating within the projects

To support young people in data collection activities and peer evaluation exercises

To work within the Confidentiality, Equal Opportunity, Health and Safety and Child Protection policies of COSG.


The worker will:


  • Deliver and support a caring mentoring and befriending service.
  • Support young people to engage in projects and other activities.
  • Address young people's barriers to participation
  • Raise the confidence and motivation levels of young people
  • Enable young people to become more proficient at using social media technology
  • Provide creative arts, music and media workshops and work towards delivering community events
  • Facilitate topic based awareness workshops e.g. youth culture, hate crime, substance misuse
  • Use appropriate assessment tools in order to identify and assess young people's barriers and achieve positive change
  • Coordinate young people's volunteering and training opportunities
  • Support young people to achieve a better quality of life
  • Provide monthly/ quarterly statistical monitoring information

Other associated tasks:


  • Local networking with community partner projects.
  • Contributing to the delivery of general events and activities as part of the team.
  • Ensuring quality assurance in delivery.
  • Risk assessment of venues & activities.
  • Promotion of positive community values in line with COSG's ethos supporting participants to participate and integrate at all times.
  • Promotion of equal opportunities at all times.
  • Full participation in staff supervision, staff meetings, the staff appraisal process and personal/professional development.
  • Contribution to fundraising events and activities.
  • Assistance with marketing and publicity, contributing to COSG newsletters.

Person Specification
Experience

  • Experience of delivering client specific and structured group sessions.
  • Experience of working with disadvantaged young people who sometimes display challenging behaviours.
  • Experience of working to targets, implementing monitoring, and recording systems.
  • Ability to lead a project/programme.
  • Experience of delivering programmes that are focussed on soft skills, mentoring and employability.
  • Experience of facilitating activitybased programmes and ensure learning outcomes are met.
  • Experience of delivering football training sessions.
Knowledge and understanding

  • An understanding of the needs of those deemed NEET and socially disadvantaged groups.
  • Knowledge of local and national policy and legislation relevant to voluntary sector, youth, and other relevant topics.
  • Knowledge of health and fitness theory and practice.
  • Understanding of young people's mental and physical health issues.
  • An understanding of safeguarding and child protection legislation and practice.
Skills and abilities

  • The ability to organise and to be selfmotivated.
  • A willingness to undertake continuous personal development.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • IT literacy.
  • A confident and calm approach to problems and an ability to use initiative in finding solutions.
