Ward in the Community is a 13 bed open forensic rehabilitation unit for adult male clients with a history of violent offending and major mental disorder.

It is one of the only services of its kind in forensic services across the UK. The service attempts to emulate community living as far as is possible in a hospital environment.

Reasons for referral to WIC include uncertainty regarding risk in the community due to prolonged admission to secure services and / or other issues that complicate discharge including personality disorder, substance abuse, institutionalisation, treatment resistant disorders, marked neuropsychological deficits, and physical health problems.

The non secure status of the service means it is also able to admit clients on a voluntary basis. These are typically much briefer admissions for a range of purposes including respite, medication re-titration / recommencement, housing issues.

Southwark Community Forensic Team provides community-based assessment, treatment and care for people in Southwark who have a history of serious violent offending behaviour and mental health problems.

It is a small Multi Professional Team based on the Lambeth Hospital site with clinical space at the Maudsley Hospital.

It provides a service to adults aged 18-65, (male and female) from Southwark deemed to require forensic case management who are living in the community.

  • To provide specialist psychological / psychotherapeutic assessments, formulations and interventions for clients in Non Secure Forensic Mental Health Services (Community and Locked Rehab) including assessing / working with psychosis, personality disorders, offending behaviour at levels expected of a qualified psychologist / psychotherapist.
  • To provide culturally appropriate psychological / psychotherapeutic interventions with carers or families of referred clients when required.
  • To assess and monitor risk and draw up appropriate risk management plans.
