Hours: 7.30am - 6.30pm Monday - Friday

This is a split shift and hours will be mutually agreed

Job Context


The role of Site Supervisor of at East Hunsbury Primary School oversees a two-form entry primary school and a 50-placed Specialist Unit.

There are two mobiles onsite, one which is rented by the external wrap around care provider and the other mobile is used for 2 of the SU classes.

There is a large and a small hall, an All-Weather-Pitch (MUGA) and Forest School area.


The job entails making sure the premises are locked and unlocked at the appropriate times, checking security and dealing with any faults or damage to property, ensuring the utility services are operational (heating, lighting and electrical supply), and that cleaning is carried out to all areas including toilets and they are well-stocked with essentials.

The post holder will carry out minor maintenance tasks and contract out when larger, more complex works are needed.

Cleaning is contracted out; therefore, the Site Supervisor will monitor and report on the work of the contracted staff and oversee their deployment.


The job holder has a greater responsibility than a Site Supervisor I or II for planning and management of projects carried out by contractors or related to internal affairs.

The job holder will arrange and/or manage lettings in collaboration with, or under the direction of, the School Business Manager or Headteacher.

The post holder will also be responsible for some risk assessments associated with the site and for overseeing the smooth running of events.


Main Purpose

The Site Supervisor is responsible for:

  • Overseeing the smooth running, maintenance and safety of the school site.
  • To ensure that all internal and external areas of the premises are clean, wellmaintained, safe and secure, this includes all buildings, communal areas and grounds.
  • Oversee the general running of school events throughout the year e.g. setting up for training and events such as sports day, inset days or performances.
  • Carrying out cleaning, handyperson activities, routine maintenance and refurbishment, porterage, and minor repairs. These tasks are to be carried out with the appropriate resources and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • To manage, or monitor, small to largescale building and maintenance tasks including projects carried out by internal employees or external agencies.
  • Supervision of external cleaning staff
  • Promoting health and safety around the school at all times
  • Managing other site supervisors I and II if in post
  • Supervising and overseeing the management of any external contractors
  • Comply with the reporting duties including ensuring EVERY is compliant with Trust expectations
  • Complete risk assessments for equipment or works being undertaken when necessary
  • Advising the SBM and Headteacher on suggested improvements to the general school environment
  • To improve the productivity of site management and to carry out preplanned maintenance programmes,

Duties and responsibilities

General duties and main accountabilities

  • Monitor the condition of the building, heating system, alarms and other utility functions as required and report on any faults or damages that need immediate or longer-term attention to the line manager so that the building support infrastructure remains sustainable.
  • Carry out fire and lockdown alarm testing regularly and complete risk assessments for all site staff and contractors and provide a report on matters needing attention.
  • In conjunction with the School Business Manager and Headteacher, monitor the day-to-day maintenance and repair budget and cleaning materials budget.
  • To advise on a rolling programme or re-decoration / refurbishment both internal and externally.
  • Monitor and maintain the general grounds e.g. mowing manageable areas, weeding and keeping flower beds/school frontage well maintained as well as repairing any gates or structures as appropriate. Report any issues to the School Business Manager or Headteacher
  • Plan, organise and carry out semi-skilled DIY maintenance and building work using a wide range of tools and equipment so that buildings, fixtures and fittings are safe to use and in good working condition. This may include installing and refitting cupboards, doors and wall boards.
  • Prepare schedules of work for contractors, in collaboration with the SBM negotiate price and agree timescales; supervise contractors to ensure work is done as required and conforms to safety requirements and timescales.
  • To order and supervise repairs and act as project manager for small maintenance contracts and improvement schemes, ensuring best value for money is received.
