Charities & Philanthropy Associate (2-4 PQE):
Please note, this opportunity can be located in any of our offices: London, Guildford or Cheltenham.

The Charities & Philanthropy team sits within our Private Client department, but spans the entire Firm, sharing
expertise, knowledge and resources to provide our charity and philanthropy clients with the support and advice they
need. We have been consistently ranked as one of the top legal advisers to charities by Charity Finance Magazine and
the Chambers and Legal 500 directories.

We act for a diverse range of charities and not-for-profit organisations. Our clients include household names, national
and international charities, family charitable trusts, philanthropists, foundations, schools, livery companies and
professional and governing bodies as well as corporates requiring assistance with their charitable projects,
collaborations and philanthropy. Through this, our core Charities & Philanthropy team deal with a wide range of
regulatory, governance and constitutional matters and provide advice on a variety of legal areas for not-for-profit
clients and philanthropists as their sole practice area. Forming an integral part of the Charities, Philanthropy and Not
for Profit team, the Associate role will advise a range of institutional and household name charities on a wide variety
of regulatory, governance, commercial and corporate matters and also advise high net worth individuals and wellknown
corporates on their philanthropic giving, including setting up charitable foundations, and advising on and
negotiating collaborations and funding agreements. Working principally with the head of our Charities and
Philanthropy team, the Associate will also work for a range of partners within the Private Client division and across
the Firm. This is an opportunity for those looking to develop their careers within a friendly collegiate team that is

The team draws on the full spectrum of services offered by the Firm to tend to its many prominent clients.

The
Associate should be able to advise clients on an array of issues that impact charities, and others involved in the sector,
including fundraising and commercial arrangements, collaborations, mergers, restructuring and registrations, as well
as advising on regulatory compliance and governance reviews. Across the firm we provide multi
- disciplinary services
for charities including Real Estate, Employment, IP and trademarks, commercial and litigation work.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide practical and commercial legal advice to clients in a clear and succinct manner
  • Manage a substantial and varied workload efficiently and cost effectively with supervision, where appropriate
  • Draft more complex documents with minimum instruction and supervision, making use of appropriate
precedents

  • Where appropriate, delegate, coordinate and supervise the work of more junior members of the team
  • Actively participate in client marketing opportunities such as client seminars, presentations and pitches
  • Identify client opportunities and take appropriate steps to follow through
  • Contribute to group knowledge and knowhow initiatives
  • Comply with all relevant legal and regulatory obligations including the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA)
Standards and Regulations, and Principles.

Person Specification

  • Be an England and Wales qualified lawyer (or equivalent) with a minimum of 24 years' PQE
  • Have experience of working with clients in the sector and knowledge of the regulation of charities
  • Demonstrate good judgement and a good legal and commercial understanding of client's particular needs
  • Understand scope of the tasks, manage time effectively and perform well under time and work pressures
  • Take a 'hands on' approach to managing own files and a broad case load
  • Have a high degree of attention to detail
  • Have strong problemsolving skills
  • Be flexible and willing to undertake a wide variety of tasks
  • Be a proactive team player, who is also highly selfmotivated and able to work on their own initiative
  • Build rapport with clients and develops an effective working relationship
  • Flexible and willing to go the extra mile
  • Have excellent all round IT skills, MS Office including Excel and Word
