Description

This post forms part of an Asthma+Lung UK Chair award Dr Molyneaux to investigate how microbial interaction with the host immune system drives inflammation and fibrosis.

The post will investigate how interactions between the gut and lung microbiome, lung-resident inflammatory cells and airway epithelium contribute to lung inflammation, remodelling and dysfunction.

The work will involve a variety of in vitro techniques to evaluate inflammation and airway remodelling processes that are cardinal features of pulmonary fibrosis - utilising primary cells isolated from patients and healthy individuals.

This post will provide the opportunity to develop and drive a research project as well as writing up work for presentation and publication.

Therefore, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, have excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills are essential.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • To investigate phenotypic and molecular characteristics of pulmonary cells in health and disease by flow cytometry and transcriptomic analysis.
  • To conduct cytokine assays, histological analysis, immunocytochemistry, RNA extraction and real time PCR.
  • To conduct and plan own scientific work with appropriate supervision.
  • To contribute to the design of future experiments.
  • To maintain highly organised and accurate record of experimental work.
  • To conduct data analysis, ensuring the validity and reliability of data at all times.
  • To contribute to the smooth running of the Group's laboratories and, facilities with other scientists, clinicians, technicians and students within the laboratories.
  • To conduct and plan own scientific work with appropriate supervision.
  • To identify and develop suitable techniques, software, equipment for the collection and analysis of data
  • To conduct data analysis
  • To maintain highly organised and accurate record of experimental work
  • To actively participate in the research programme of the Lloyd Group and IRD Department
  • To publish in high quality journals and to present data at national and international meetings.
  • To participate in Group/Unit research meetings and internal seminars.
  • To collaborate with other allied scientists within Imperial College and elsewhere in London and abroad, as appropriate.

Essential requirements:

-
Research Associate: Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Immunology or medical statistics or a closely related discipline
-
Research Assistant: Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Immunology or medical statistics or a closely related discipline

  • Experience with multiparameter flow cytometry and cell sorting.
  • Experience or working with primary human cells (including macrophages, bronchial epithelial cells and fibroblasts) and primary cell culture.

  • Microscopy

  • Microscopy
and imaging experience (Confocal, widefield, live cell imaging, intravital or Imaging Mass Cytometry).

  • Experience of single cell or bulk RNAseq, NGS, Spatial Transcriptomics or proteomics
  • Experience using R and/or python code for bioinformatics data analysis of multiplex complex datasets.
