    Description

We are looking to grow our social media team with a full-time Social Media Editor to work alongside our Social Lead in creating, coordinating and maintaining our output across platforms including (but not limited to) Instagram, TikTok, and X.

Social media is a crucial editorial output, often perceived as our 'voice'.

It is how we get articles, audio and video content to our existing audience and how we reach new ones.

It is also increasingly how we respond first to breaking news and fill gaps in our coverage.

You will be expected to integrate into existing teams, working below the Social Lead and closely with other section heads to implement workflows and bespoke strategies to produce and optimise content.

You will edit and produce social-first content, with a particular focus on news.

You will need excellent copywriting skills and experience in journalism; experience managing social media channels; a keen political sense and active engagement with current affairs; impeccable attention to detail and a thorough understanding of different social platforms and how they can be used to reach new audiences.

A constructive and flexible approach is crucial, as well as a willingness to innovate.

You will work well with existing teams and the Social Lead, and make some autonomous decisions about editorial priorities. You will be able to operate the day-to-day aspects of this role independently when needed.

You will be unflappable, tapped into what's happening and willing to work flexible hours to fulfil the needs of a growing media organisation.

We particularly encourage women and people from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

    Key Responsibilities
Support the Social Lead in running all of NM's social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, Threads).
    Schedule content across platforms.
Identify evergreen content and work on repackaging it.

Work with section heads to commission high-quality social media content – including gathering, accepting and rejecting content ideas from other staff as appropriate.

Work with teams of journalists, videographers, and designers to maintain the tempo and quality of our work.
Write and edit social news copy, including breaking news.
Be confident embodying the voice of NM across social media channels.
Ensure all social copy is to a high standard and free of errors.
Create platform-specific assets derived from our articles, video and audio content.
Coordinate original social-first reporting, e.g. protest coverage.
Script social media videos of varying style and format. Edit scripts for others.

    Person Specification
    Essential Skills
Experience in journalism and/or a relevant degree/diploma (NCTJ, MA in Journalism)
    Excellent copywriting and editing skills
Experience in a social media role, ideally at a relevant organisation

Keen understanding of what makes content fly on social media — whether that's optimising videos to maximise attention or writing captions that stand out on newsfeeds.

Tailored knowledge of different social platforms and how to succeed on each one.
    Some knowledge of media law
Interest in news, current affairs, British politics and the global left
Commitment to the aims and values of Novara Media
    Strong editorial judgement
An excellent written and verbal communicator
    Meticulous attention to detail
    Very organised
Plugged into the latest social media trends and future-facing platform updates

    Desirable Skills
    Basic video editing skills
    Newsroom experience
Deep understanding of the future of digital culture on platforms like TikTok.
    Adobe Creative Suite skills
    Experience making shareable graphics
