Biomedical Laboratory Assistant (known as HHTO)

Job Summary


The Red Cell Immunohaematology department provides reference and blood provision services to regional hospitals using advanced red cell immunohaematology techniques.


As a Biomedical Laboratory Assistant, you will provide predominantly clerical support for the department, which includes unpacking and sorting samples, data entry into the laboratory LIMS system, sending reports and filing.

Other duties include processing and testing samples using an automated analyser, cleaning and reagent production.


We will provide you with an extensive induction and training programme and ongoing development to support you in your role and achieving your career ambitions.

This role is based at our Blood Centre in Colindale. This is a purpose built, state-of-the art building which is the largest blood manufacturing centre in the world.

As part of the selection process, you will be invited to attend our Blood Centre in Colindale, so that you can gain an understanding of the requirements of this essential role.


Main duties of the job

  • Working in the Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) Laboratory, you will be required to participate in a range of routine clinical, technical and scientific activities in preparing and testing blood samples from Hospital Patients, with the support of your supervisor and other team members
  • You may be required to support and train less experienced staff in some instances
  • You will be required to undertake precise repetitive manipulation of equipment and blood samples and carry out routine tasks on a regular basis
  • You will be required to handle blood samples and a range of equipment
  • The role will require you to work and provide support during the routine opening hours of the laboratory
  • You will be required to manually handle equipment, with appropriate training

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience of working with Information Technology such as Microsoft Office

Qualifications and Training

  • Willingness to undertake further training and development
