The Role


Reporting to the Corporate Communications Manager, the Communications Advisor is responsible for all communications, government relations, stakeholder management, policy coverage, community investment related activities for Base Metals UK & Asian Refineries.

The incumbent will provide direct support to the Head of UK & Asian Operations in these areas of expertise, as well as members of the respective senior leadership teams in the UK and Japan.


As part of the Base Metals and North Atlantic communication team and in collaboration with the corporate affairs and sustainability teams, the Advisor will contribute to, and strengthen the development, implementation, quality, and strategy behind all site led communication, stakeholder and government relations and community relationship related activities.

This role will create and implement site specific communications, proactive stakeholder outreach and relationship management, and community investment plans that align with the overall Base Metals strategic and corporate plans, while also supporting site specific goals and objectives.

This role will sit as part of both the site leaderships team, providing strategic communications and corporate affairs, sustainability counsel and advice to leaders.


Accountabilities

  • Create and execute a strategic internal communication plan that aligns with the overall corporate communications plan and supports the site specific goals and objectives.
  • Create and execute external campaigns on policy initiatives, media and related communication plans, strategic positive agendas that relate to Vale's interests in the UK and Japan / Asia.
  • Create and execute a strategic community investment plan that aligns with the overall Vale and Vale Base Metals corporate community investment plan and support site specific goals and objectives.
  • Ensure both refineries have solid relationships with key local stakeholders inclusive of communities, governments and other stakeholders identified as important to Vale's interests
  • Support the business managing social risks/impacts and communities' grievances using Vale's tools.
  • Work with the Matsusaka leadership team to provide communications and community investment support, with the goal of increasing their visibility and participation in Base Metals operations.
  • Audit the gaps in communications materials at the operations to ensure compliance and inclusion of corporate communications campaigns such as cultural transformation, safety, D&I etc.
  • Create and manage a calendar of internal communications events and activities for UK & Asia with support from the Senior Advisor Operational Communications as well as the Base Metals communication team. Examples of related activities include supporting global and local communication campaign roll outs, assisting with Supervisors Cascade, creating content for digital signage, intranet/yammer, Vale News, etc.
  • Work in partnership with the external communications team to anticipate issues and develop proactive messaging.
  • Regular travel to both operations, as well as London and Tokyo and other Vale jurisdictions will be required.
  • Advise and support refineries in meeting the required branding in all forms of communication tool.

Job requirements

  • Post-Graduate Degree in Business or Communications related discipline is preferrable.
  • Understanding of the mining industry and industry positions on key issues is preferrable.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written in English is mandatory.
  • Considerable experience in writing and executing communications and stakeholder engagement plans
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact in a positive and productive way with key audiences (employees, senior leadership, etc).
  • Ability to intuitively understand/anticipate how specific actions/messages will impact on different stakeholders.
