Salary:
£24,000 - £27,000 per annum (dependant on experience and qualifications).

Halliwell Homes is clinically informed practice encompassing educational, clinical and residential care services.

Our objective is to enhance the psychological wellbeing of children within the care system through our Restorative Parenting recovery programme.


The main purpose of this role will be to safely, effectively and efficiently undertake planned and remedial maintenance tasks at four of our sites in North Manchester in order to support the delivery of the Restorative Parenting Recovery Programme and maintain a therapeutic environment, including minor repairs to the building fabric and fixtures, minor plasterwork repairs and refurbishing of bedrooms in preparation for new placements.

There will also be a need to provide occasional cover across the other four Greater Manchester and four Stoke-on-Trent sites.


The main responsibilities for the role will include:

  • To visits all sites to undertake a mixture of directed and proactive maintenance tasks.
  • To ensure the building is maintained according to the agreed Restorative Parent Specification and prepared within agreed timeframes ready for new children joining the programme.
  • Repair and adjust door closers, intumescent strips, locks and hinges
  • Fit door guards and window restrictors
  • Basic joinery and plumbing
  • Assisting in the inspection of works completed by external contractors to ensure works are completed on time to satisfactory standards.
  • Carry out and maintain COSHH Assessments for hazardous substances used.
  • Moving furniture and equipment as necessary.
  • Calculating the amount of materials and time required for all works and liaising with the Health, Safety and Maintenance Coordinator to ensure efficient workflows distribution of resources across the organisation.
  • Choosing and tools, equipment and materials necessary to fulfil the role.
  • To keep work areas safe and tidy whilst carrying out tasks so as to minimise the risk to children on the programme.
  • To undertake minor tiling and plastering tasks as required
  • To report to the Health and Safety and Maintenance Coordinator any faults noted at the houses or schools
  • To attend any training requirements considered necessary to carry out the role.
  • Attend supervision meetings as agreed to review performance and agree targets.
  • To assist the Health, Safety and Building Maintenance Team to ensure Halliwell buildings are safe and fit for use.
  • Proactively check communal areas and bedrooms against agreed specifications and report to the Health, Safety and Maintenance Coordinator any defects and unsafe conditions.
  • To understand, comply with and maintain standards outlined in Halliwell Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • To complete as directed any documents or forms required as part of their duties
  • To assist with any other ad hoc duties commensurate to the job role and pay scale, as directed by management
  • City and Guilds Carpentry and Joinery (6706)
  • City and Guilds Plastering (6708)
  • Practical experience working in a handyperson or similar role
  • Experience working with customers and working to customer standard requirements
  • Experience prioritising own workload and diarising appointments to maximise best use of time in a working day
  • Experience maintaining records on refurbishment works and in working to industry standards
  • Experience in sourcing appropriate equipment, tools and materials to carry out handyman / decorating duties appropriate to the working environment and in always in a safe manner
  • Experience in recognising own ability and skill set and when a job needs passing on to an accredited professional e.g. electrical type work
