Description
First Light Fusion are designing the world's largest pulsed power machine, Machine 4.

This will be a circa 100MJ, multi-megavolt, short pulse machine capable of driving currents in excess of 45 MA in our loads.

The primary purpose of this machine will be to electro-magnetically launch hyper-velocity projectiles in order to test FLF's novel 'projectile fusion' concept.

Project costs are in the region of £250m.


Responsibilities will include:


The mechanical design group are responsible for the analysis, design, review and manufacture of the mechanical hardware associated with M4 which includes very large bespoke components and structural elements.

Due to the scale of the project much of this will be delivered through engineering partners or contractors, so experience of managing these types of relationships and delivery teams will be critical to the role.

In this role you will work with the Head of Department and other Group Leaders to oversee work on M4 design and manufacture, managing a group engineers and engineering partners.

You will develop the people, tools, and practices to enable the realisation M4.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Helping to provide strategic vision for mechanical engineering design and partnerships.
  • Line management of a small but rapidly growing team of engineers
  • Providing expert engineering/scientific input to multidisciplinary teams
  • Producing analysis and calculations for design work

Essential:


  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent industrial experience
  • Experience of delivering on large scientific or industrial projects
  • Experience of leading engineering teams
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of a variety of mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of health and safety matters relating to engineering
  • Passion for fusion and for taking a bold approach to a highrisk transformational technology.
  • Fast and effective problemsolving skills
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills

Desirable:


  • Experience solving complex engineering problems in a scientific environment
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver to agreed objectives and manage resources using project management techniques
  • An understanding of Pulsed Power or large electrical systems
