Description

The locum medical oncologist appointed will work with the colorectal and NET team to provide a comprehensive clinical service for patients.

This includes patients in the outpatient, inpatient and ambulatory settings, delivering Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) and providing Medical Oncology input to the Colorectal and NET MDTs and includes a clinic at our Satellite Centre at Macclesfield along with 3 PAs of Acute oncology sessions.


The Medical Oncology Colorectal Disease Group, Chaired by Dr Michael Braun consists of 7 Medical Oncologists who manage patients diagnosed within the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Network who require SACT treatment, with a number of oncologists delivering a peripheral service through MDTs and clinics.

Systemic therapy is delivered centrally or given to patients at peripheral or outreach clinics according to agreed protocols.


For the 2 NET sessions the appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide consultant level care for patients with NET malignancies and attend the weekly MDT (Friday).

This includes providing outpatient review through the outpatient clinic and day case units (as appropriate), where Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy Treatments are delivered, as well as inpatient care on the main adult oncology wards

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The role will be responsible for:


Acute Oncology (3.75PAs):


The Appointee with provide consultant level support to the acute oncology service at the Christie and will be based on the Oncology Assessment unit for these sessions.

This post aims to provide dedicated consultant acute oncology clinical time for 3 sessions per week.

Management of Acute Oncology patients admitted to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

Attendance at Board rounds

Providing support and education for junior doctors.


Colorectal Oncology (4.25PAs):

Management of colorectal patients receiving standard and clinical trials including treatment decisions and ongoing care.


Participating in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up to date protocols, guidelines and clinical audit, under the supervision of the other consultants in in the unit.

Contribute to current research projects and establish new opportunities to expand and develop research within the team.


Revision and development of evidence-based protocols for patients and undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.

Maintaining a level of continuing professional development consistent the recommendations of the Royal College and Physicians.

Contributing to the undergraduate teaching of medical students on oncology topics.

Actively contributing to the training of juniors doctors and other multi-disciplinary team members in both in-patient and outpatient departments.

Undertake clinical audit as a member of The Christie Medical Staff Committee.


Neuroendocrine (2PA):

Management of Neuroendocrine (NET) patients receiving standard and clinical trials including treatment decisions and ongoing care.


Participating in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up to date protocols, guidelines and clinical audit, under the supervision of the other consultants in in the unit.

Contribute to current research projects and establish new opportunities to expand and develop research within the team.


Revision and development of evidence-based protocols for patients and undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.

Maintaining a level of continuing professional development consistent the recommendations of the Royal College and Physicians.

Actively contributing to the training of juniors doctors and other multi-disciplinary team members in both in-patient and outpatient departments.

In addition, consultants in the department share in an on-call rota that involves a commitment to a full week in every twenty weeks.
