Description

Responsibilities will include:

The Model Validation Group Lead, with their team, will perform simulations of both internal and external experiments to determine the validity and impact of modelling choices and assumptions, by comparison of simulation data to experimental data.

Model validation requires working closely with experimental physicists to assist the design of validation experiments and develop the required synthetic diagnostics to make reliable comparison with observables.

To get a complete picture of how suitable our codes are for purpose, the team must also consider uncertainties in the solutions of simulations and experimental data.

Model validation also closely relates to the Target Design departments activities, sharing common simulation execution and post-processing tools and advising on optimal code configuration.

In support of the wider department, you will help colleagues to identify, develop, and qualify the models and computational tools that the scientific team use for end-to-end design, optimisation, and interpretation of First Light's inertially confined fusion systems and experiments, which currently includes

  • A 2D AMR radiationhydrodynamics code
  • A 3D radiation MHD code
  • Equation of State Models
  • Microphysics models
  • Opacity models
  • A systems code and associated submodels.
  • An extensive continuous integration suite of verification and validation test cases

We endeavour to develop our computational tools to the highest levels of science and engineering quality and assurance, where practicably possible.

Essential:

  • A PhD in a relevant technical discipline (e.g. Physics, Maths, Engineering etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in providing technical leadership in the validation of complex physics codes.
  • Experience in the development of synthetic diagnostics
  • Experience contributing to the design of code validation experiments.
  • A proven track record of successfully planning and executing physicsbased projects.
  • A good understanding of computational physics and software engineering practices
  • Demonstrated selfmotivation, enthusiasm to work in a dynamic team environment, and evidence of taking the initiative.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Desirable:

  • A comprehensive understanding of the physics of inertial confinement fusion
  • Previous team/group management experience
  • Appreciation of how data science and machine learning can support model validation.
  • Experience of code validation to ASME or equivalent standards
