Job Introduction

Do you want to help keep children safe in East Sussex?
East Sussex Safeguarding Children Partnership (ESSCP) wants to recruit a new Lay Member. Could you?

  • Act as an independent, informed observer; able to ask questions others might not think of asking?
  • Provide constructive challenge to the ESSCP on its work?
  • Help the ESSCP link with our local community and voluntary groups?
  • Encourage our community to become involved in child safety issues?
The Safeguarding Children Partnership coordinates the work of local agencies to help protect children.

This requires proactive intervention for children who are abused; targeted work with children at risk of harm; and preventative work within the community.

Members include senior representatives from East Sussex County Council, Sussex Police and local Health services.


Lay Members will be expected to attend all Board meetings, and you may also attend other ESSCP meetings or being involved in specific safeguarding projects.


  • Are committed to improving safeguarding outcomes for children and young people
  • Have confidence to ask questions and constructively challenge the views and assumptions of senior professionals
  • Are able to communicate effectively within meetings
  • Live within East Sussex

Application process
Lay Members should be independent of local agencies in order to be able to scrutinise and challenge practice. You should not have been an employee of any agency represented on the Board for at least 2 years.


Interviews
Interviews will be held on Tuesday 17 January 2023. The interview panel will include members of the ESSCP, including a Health and Police representative.


Benefits
The role is a voluntary one, with expenses such as travel costs and subsistence reimbursed if required.

Lay members will be supported by the ESSCP Business Managers and Independent Chair.

We will also offer opportunities to meet with other Board members, attend a wide range of safeguarding children training, and participate in development sessions with the other ESSCP Lay Members.

Additional Information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.


Due to the restrictions we cannot guarantee that individuals that meet the requirements of the Points-based Immigration System will be issued with clearance to obtain work permits.

Hours of work:

Lay Members will be required to attend a Board meeting every three months, and read background material between meetings.

Lay Members may also attend subgroups and be involved in projects or initiatives as required/desired.

Working pattern:
Meetings take place within normal working hours and are generally held during term time.

Fixed term for:
Lay Members are appointed for a term of two years, with an annual review. After this period further work will be considered.
