Family Learning is part of Community Learning and Skills in Kent Adult Education, and we deliver a wide variety of engaging and interesting courses to families in the community.

Our aim is to support fathers, mothers and carers to engage in learning, improve their life chances and to enjoy life with their children.


We are recruiting a Family Learning Lecturer on a Permanent Relief contract, to deliver a range of Family Learning courses including: Family English, Maths and Language (ESOL) courses in the Maidstone, Ashford and Sittingbourne areas.

We require a person who is willing to travel across these areas to meet delivery needs and is flexible to work in the school holidays.

The role of a Family Learning tutor is interesting, enjoyable and above all, hugely rewarding.

To join our successful, supportive and dedicated team you will need to show that you:


  • Have experience of working with families in the community.
  • Are motivated to make learning fun, enjoyable and inspirational.
  • Are willing to produce lesson plans and complete standardised paperwork.
  • Are able to deliver at Entry Level to Level 2 across a range of programmes to exam.
  • Have the ability to travel across a wide geographical area in a timely and flexible manner at various times of the day is essential.
  • Are flexible to teach various hours during the week including evenings and in school holidays (and the very occasional Saturday by prior agreement).


Strong English and Maths skills are required (minimum Level 2 or GCSE Grade C/4) to underpin all delivery, as programmes are mapped to the Adult Core Curriculum and can progress to Functional Skills and Trinity ESOL qualifications.

Knowledge of the Primary Curriculum is also required.

You will work in a range of primary schools, Children's Centres, community-based venues and online from home. Courses range from one week to four terms, usually delivered in two hourly sessions per week.


You will be paid for preparation as well as teaching time on a ratio of 1:1 and be expected to attend three tutor meetings per year and actively engage with CPD.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position.

The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements.
