Why does the role exist?


We have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious, self-motivated team player who wants to make an impact within the Built Environment.

This role is suitable for a practically orientated engineer who feels they can lead and build a successful testing team.

The team generally test to published standards but develop bespoke testing programmes as required to validate the performance of building products and systems commonly used within the construction industry, including; doors, windows, roofing products, partition systems, façade elements as well as sustainable technologies such as solar panels.

It is impossible to list all the things we test, but this variety makes the role challenging and interesting.


There is significant potential for growth within this role due to the planned expansion of the team over the next 12-18 months, with changes in The Construction Products Regulation creating an opportunity for BRE to support the industry and provide assurance.

The value this role will add:

  • Leading, and managing an established team of specialist engineers and technicians, ensuring the team has the correct technical competency to deliver their projects.
  • Mentoring or supporting junior members of the team with a focus on ensuring personal development plans are in place, with clear succession plans for the future.
  • Identify and implement operational improvements both for the running of the team and improving technical delivery/throughput.
  • Winning and delivering buildingrelated testing services to our customers in diverse sectors from tender to final reporting stage.
  • Take ownership of the team's project delivery programme to ensure efficient utilisation of both the team and physical resources/labs.
  • Attendance at client meetings/workshops, to ensure delivery of work and growth of customer relationships.
  • Establishing client's needs; interpreting these along with design specifications/codes and standards to create proposals for testing work.
  • Responsible for the technical output of the team, ensuring robustness in approach.
  • Reporting and interpreting test outcomes.
  • Preparing own and supervising the teams' technical reports.
  • Reviewing and approving technical work of others in field of expertise.
  • Opportunity to attend and contribute to working groups and technical committees to influence the built environment and network within industry

What experience and skills does the role need?

Essential:

  • A passion for what they do, with the desire to ask questions and find answers.
  • Ability to "think outside of the box"
  • Previous experience leading a technical team

Experience in a construction or testing-related industry

  • Excellent communication and problemsolving skills
  • Good command of English as a working language (written and verbal communication)
  • Team player always, demonstrating a professional and courteous attitude
  • Experience of developing junior team members
  • Can demonstrate experience of running projects in parallel and be able to manage their time accordingly.
  • Leads by example in relation to Health, Safety and Environmental issues.
  • Working knowledge of standards relating to construction products and testing/specification.
***Desirable:

  • Degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline; preferably Mechanical, Structural or Façade Engineering background
  • Practical experience of testing/experimentation within a laboratory setting or onsite
  • Experience working with both technical and nontechnical clients
  • Experience in aspects of building design potentially including façade elements, façade products, roofing products and systems
  • Prior experience of working in a UKAS Accredited Testing Laboratory
  • Experience of developing testing procedures
Experience of product certification or awareness of the associated processes
