Job Summary Working under the direction of the Nurse Lead and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population.

In addition, the phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team on an as required basis. Reporting Line The Job Holder reports directly to the Nurse Lead and they will be their mentor. Periodic reviews of performance will be undertaken along with a formal appraisal every 12 months.

Principal Responsibilities The following are the core responsibilities of the phlebotomist.

There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
  • Perfoming venepunture in accordance with practice protocols
  • Maintaining accurate patient records on SystmOne
  • The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples
  • Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
  • Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters
