BPSS Security Clearance required for this role

Full UK driving licence

Role will involve some weekend working on occasions


A Business & Community Support Officer is required to effectively contribute to the work of the Corporate Lead - Town Centres and Foreshore Senior Officer and Environmental Team in ensuring that South Tyneside is a clean and attractive place to live and visit, that it is safe and that it is helping create communities where people are healthy.

To undertake technical work and provide advice in a specialist area in support of defined projects or schemes, regulatory processes or core functions.


Key responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support across the Council's Environmental Services functions.
  • Encourage businesses and the general public to comply with Community Safety and environmental quality laws and initiatives to contribute towards improving the quality of the environment in local communities.
  • Educate businesses and the general public on the importance of improving their local environment.
  • Identify and support businesses and premises not following environmental guidelines, escalating as appropriate.
  • Support Council's compliance function through visiting businesses to check compliance with environmental measures through observation.
  • Investigate requests made to the Council, including gathering relevant evidence, relating to the Council's Environment, Waste Management, Community Safety and other regulatory functions.
  • Undertake visits, inspections, surveys, investigations, monitoring and surveillance as directed, in relation to the Council's Town Centre Management, Environment, Waste Management and other regulatory functions.
  • Carry out quality assessments and monitoring in relation to environmental matters and community safety such as abandoned waste, flytipping, graffiti, streetlighting, antisocial behaviour. Systematically patrol those areas identified within the Community Safety Partnership Tasking and Safer Neighbourhood Teams. Liaise with Northumbria Police, Community Safety and other partner agencies on all antisocial and criminal activities.
  • Support the Council's enforcement teams in relation to a range of regulatory functions, for example issuing fixed penalty notices (FPNs) under direction, serving formal notices and issuing letters and other documents as may be required. Support the legal enforcement process through the preparation of witness statements and attending Court and giving evidence as and when required.
  • Attend tasking meetings and report daily activity and intelligence and information from daily visits using appropriate methods. Produce reports, letters and other appropriate documents as may be required.

Qualifications:


  • 5 GCSE's at grade c or above and must include English and Maths.

Experience:


  • Experience of working within customerfacing environments.
  • Experience of dealing with difficult situations and conversations.
  • Experience of undertaking inspection and monitoring work.
  • Experience of writing reports for supervising officers.
  • Experience of maintaining agreed performance targets.
  • Experience of maintaining work records and statistics.
  • Experience of serving Fixed Penalty Notices and other legal documents and of undertaking PACE interviews desirable.
  • Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
  • Knowledge of law relating to Antisocial behaviour, community safety and the environment desirable.

Skills & Abilities:


  • Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including the general public, business staff and other work colleagues.
  • Able to undertake investigation work to identify and resolve problems in actual working environments.
  • Able to quickly form constructive working relationships with other colleagues
