Description
The successful applicant will be primarily based at Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.

However, as with all NCIC appointments and in line with the Terms and Conditions of Consultant Medical Staff 2003, all consultants may be required to work across site in West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven and other Trust sites to provide a North and West Cumbria service in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

The Trust is looking to recruit a Consultant Ortho-geriatrician to help us provide the best quality of medical care for our elderly hip/fragility fracture population.

Trauma is a substantial part of the workload across the Trust.

This is largely because of our geographical location, which is relatively isolated in an area with great appeal to tourists, many of whom engage in outdoor pursuits such as fell walking and some others in more adventurous activities.

We, therefore have a higher than expected level of trauma work load for a District General Hospital Trust of equivalent size.

Our Emergency Department is a designated Trauma Unit Plus wherein we treat more than the average numbers of DGH level trauma admissions.

We are the busiest hip/femur fracture admitting unit in the North West of England. All our hip/femur/peri-prosthetic fracture surgeries are performed in Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. We have dedicated Trauma lists on every days including the weekends. 12 Trauma and Orthopaedic consultants do a 1 in 12 daily on call rota for trauma admissions. We have dedicated trauma wards in Maple B and D. We conduct Virtual Fracture clinics and Trauma clinics every day of the year

At NCIC, we have an ambition to deliver outstanding hospital and health services to half a million people.

Established on 1st October 2019, the Trust is creating a centre of excellence in providing rural and remote healthcare and provides a wide range of community and acute services throughout north Cumbria and beyond.

We're responsible for delivering over 70 services across 15 main locations and we employ more than 6,500 members of staff.

Our 5 key principles demonstrate our belief in the delivery of 'safe, high quality care every time'.

  • Being a clinically led organisation
  • Quality and safety at the heart
  • A positive patient experience every time
  • A great place to work
  • Managing our money well

As an organisation we are serious about supporting a diverse workforce that reflects our local community and are very much focused on being an inclusive and compassionate place to work.
