An exciting opportunity has arisen at the National Housing Federation (NHF) for an External Affairs Manager role. The NHF is the voice of housing associations in England.

We are the trade body to almost 600 housing associations, who have grown from philanthropicroots to provide 2.6 million homes to around 6 million people.

Could you be our new External Affairs Manager? This role will be working with our housing association members in the North East of England and leading a programme of engagement with our supported housing members.


You may already have a strong understanding of housing, but more importantly, you will be a skilled relationship manager, with fantastic communication and influencing skills.

You will be confident working at the most senior level, including with housingassociations' chief executives, board members and directors.


In this role, you will be the NHF's relationship manager for a defined cohort of housing associations within our membership, supporting them through challenging times, enabling collaboration and innovation across the sector and championing the role of housingassociations with stakeholders.

You will also lead our member engagement on key sector issues nationally making sure that our wider policy, lobbying and campaigns work reflects our members' priorities and our members are at the heart of everything the NHFdoes.


Key elements of the role:


  • To relationship manage a cohort of specified members to maximise member satisfaction and retention through ensuring they receive the very best customer service from the NHF.
  • To design and implement structured member engagement programmes to support the members you account manage to shape the NHF's policy and influencing work, access NHF services and to inform the NHF's overall business plan and activities.
  • To be the interface and liaison between the NHF and at least one regional chair by supporting the delivery of at least quarterly chief executive forums or leaders forums and sounding boards/regional committees, as necessary.
  • To project manage and deliver a programme of member engagement on a key NHF policy priority, working collegiately with NHF colleagues to engage members across every region, size band and specialism (as appropriate).
  • To be the face and voice of the NHF with members, stakeholders and the media.
  • To ensure that as an organisation we deliver as a whole team, seamlessly, to members to achieve greatest impact in line with the business strategy.
  • To maintain high quality standards and follow NHF policy and process.
  • A sound knowledge and understanding of Housing Associations and issues affecting the wider sector.
  • The ability to build trusted relationships with customers, senior leaders and key stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Effective communication skills, in person and in writing, including the ability to credibly present at meetings and events.
  • Excellent project management skills and analytical skills and the ability to summarise complex information effectively to aid decision making.
