    Job Description

    Our Company has a rapidly growing interdisciplinary team of scientists in London and exciting plans to establish 'Skylab', a new laboratory space at the Francis Crick Institute, in the summer of 2024. This will complement the construction of a new state-of the-art Research and Discovery Centre in London's 'Knowledge Quarter' opposite King's Cross Railway station. Our new site will employ circa 800 people across our research and commercial divisions.

    We have a new opportunity for a highly motivated and passionate Scientist with in vitro assay expertise to join the Translational Biomarker Group within Global Neuroscience Discovery to be based in Skylab, at the Francis Crick Institute, Kings Cross, London. You will join a team of Global experts leading biomarker research projects to translate drug discovery programmes into the clinic for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, psychiatric disease and pain disorders.

    Role overview:

    As a skilled in vitro scientist, you will contribute to the development and implementation of biomarker assays. You will perform laboratory studies, analysing biomarkers in tissues and biofluids from preclinical models and patients, and contribute to the identification and validation of translational biomarkers. As a highly organized individual, you will also take a leading role in Translational Biomarker laboratory operations, including end-to-end life cycle management of clinical biospecimens. You will collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and across our global organization, as well as academics and CROs. The position will also require the ability to assess the scientific literature, develop new technical expertise, and be an active participant in scientific dialogue in project meetings.

    What you will need to be successful in this role:

    • BSc or MSc in a life sciences discipline (Pharmacology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry or related) with experience of developing and applying in vitro assays within a biotech, pharmaceutical or academic setting

    What you will do:

    • Support delivery of drug discovery projects by planning, developing and performing in vitro biomarker assays
    • Collaborate within multi-functional teams, sharing your data and conclusions
    • Actively participate in discussions to resolve research issues and contribute to decision-making
    • Keep up to date with advancements in the field of neurodegenerative disease biomarkers and apply knowledge to create novel experimental approaches
    • Contribute to scientific reports and publications in high quality journals
    • Contribute to laboratory operations including taking ownership of end-to-end lifecycle management of clinical biospecimens with the Translational Biomarker Laboratory

    Required Experience:

    • Technical expertise in in vitro techniques used for analysis of biomarkers in patient samples and preclinical models. For example, immunoassays, primary and clonal cell culture, tissue histology or imaging methods
    • Self-motivated and resourceful with a demonstrated ability to develop and deliver high quality validated assays to a level of accuracy and reproducibly suited for biomarker studies
    • Able to generates robust and reproducible data in a timely manner
    • Performs data analysis, interprets study results and provides conclusions
    • Detail-oriented, with excellent organizational and record-keeping skills
    • Well-developed oral and written communication skills and keen ability to engage internal and external team members in collaborative research
    • The ability to work flexibly within teams and across projects and adapt quickly to new priorities

    Desired Experience

    • An understanding of the use of biomarker assays in drug discovery programmes
    • Is knowledgeable of Human Tissue Authority requirements for the storage and use of human tissue for research purposes and has experience in the application of HTA-guided code of practice within their research
    • Previous experience of management of human biobanks and/or use of human biological sample inventory systems
    • Experience in the use of laboratory automation e.g. liquid handling instrumentation
