Description
We are looking for a Head of Sustainability to join our practice in a cross-discipline role.

Practice Culture:

We believe that change is continuous and that buildings are, in effect, 'alive'. Historic buildings should be constantly maintained and sensitively adapted so that they may be lastingly used and enjoyed.

All of our projects are unique, but the aim is conservation, which means balancing the preservation of a building or place with the need for considered intervention to ensure its continued vitality.

One cannot be delivered in isolation from the other, and we ensure a holistic approach to all our projects.

Job purpose and principal objective:

Providing thought and technical leadership and embedding good sustainability practices within the organisation, and drive the external profile of the company in regard to sustainability.

Principal Responsibilities:

-
Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability strategy aligning with Insall's values and business objectives. Provide visionary leadership to ensure sustainability is integrated into all aspects of our architectural projects.
-
Project Oversight: Oversee sustainability considerations throughout the project lifecycle, from concept to completion. Collaborate with project teams to implement environmentally conscious design and advice principles and ensure compliance with relevant sustainable building standards. Provide sustainability consultant advice for clients
-
Client Engagement: Act as a sustainability ambassador and specialist consultant, engaging with clients and project teams, to understand their environmental goals and integrating these aspirations into project deliverables. Alongside the professional team, foster strong client relationships through clear communication and the development of successful execution of sustainable design solutions through our project teams.
-
Innovation and Research: Stay up to date with industry developments, emerging technologies, and best practices in sustainable design and policy. Lead research and technical development initiatives to drive innovation within the company, positioning us at the forefront of sustainable architectural and heritage consultancy practices.
-
Collaboration and Education: Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to create a culture of knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement. Provide guidance, educational resources and training to enhance our carbon literacy and integration of sustainable design principles across the organisation.
-
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to relevant environmental regulations, certifications, and standards. Input into ISO 9001 and 14001 accreditation as well as Net Zero targets and carbon neutrality accreditation. Keep abreast of changes in legislation, policy and best practice and proactively incorporate compliance measures into project workflows.
-
Internal Company Performance: Work with in-house colleagues to manage the data collection process and design the strategy moving forward for carbon reduction within the business, working towards Net Zero.

Job Description:

Key Accountabilities:

  • Specific ownership of thought and technical leadership and embedding good sustainability practices across the practice. From our approach to projects and technical and advisory proposals to our company behaviour and carbon emissions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overseeing, providing and implementing sustainable practices within our projects. Develop and improve our working tools and systems.
  • Ensuring our technical and consultancy staff are up to date with the latest sustainability principles, technical and policy information, have access to the latest training and that as a company we are brought to the forefront of the sustainability conversation in the heritage sector of the design industry (to be achieved jointly with the Head of PR and practice associates).
  • Coordinate our data collection and calculations recording our carbon emissions as a practice.
  • Develop and report on our carbon reduction strategy for the practice.
  • Report to external auditors for accreditation to conform to ISO 14001 and 9001 through continual development.
  • Jointly with technical and consultancy staff, publicly represent the practice on industry conversations around sustainability.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Marketing and Communications to ensure that the practice's external messaging around sustainability is accurate, inspiring and thoughtleading.
  • Provide specialist sustainability consultant advice for external clients and internal teams.
  • Investigate inhouse Whole Life Carbon tools and systems for the practice tailored to listed, historic and existing buildings.
  • Develop research and development projects and crossindustry initiatives, policy and guidance to showcase high standards of sustainable design and policy making.
