We are looking for an Assistant Technical Officer to work in a clean room environment. Full training will be given in all aspects of the preparation of aseptic intravenous products.

We are currently completing a business case to enable us to relocate to a state of the art new aseptic unit facility.

The post holder will be expected to participate in weekend, late duty & bank holiday rotas. Core hours are 37.5 per week within the hours of 7am - 8pm. Part time hours will be considered.


Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.


  • Undertake technical duties in the preparation of prepared/manufactured pharmaceuticals within the Pharmacy Production clean room environment ensuring all products are prepared following quality guidelines to ensure patients receive products that are safe to use
  • To complete environmental monitoring processes within production areas.

  • To prepare cancer chemotherapy, artificial nutrition and medicines for injection using laminar air flow cabinets or isolator technology within the clean room environment, under the supervision of a senior assistant technical officer or specialist technician.
  • To prepare simple product documentation, with basic calculations, and the accompanying product labels using the Prisym 2000 label software.
  • To navigate and print prescriptions, worksheets and labels from prescribing software eg. Aria for chemotherapy and Ascribe for Parenteral Nutrition.
  • To assemble the raw materials and consumables required to prepare each individual product, ensuring total segregation of each preparation using a box or tray segregation system as defined in the standard operating procedure.
  • To follow carefully all standard operating procedures to ensure all products are made safely and efficiently.
  • To complete any environmental monitoring or operator validation tests.
  • To clean the aseptic suite following specific methods of cleaning
  • To complete environmental monitoring, including settle plates, surface sampling, active microbial sampling, air flow measurements and air particle monitoring in the pharmacy production areas and other areas of the trust as required. To report any concerns immediately to the Production Service Manager or Accountable Pharmacist/Deputies.
  • To ensure that all settle plates, broth and other media are incubated for correct periods of time at the correct temperatures.
  • To ensure that temperature monitoring around the whole department is carried out ensuring that all systems, cold stores, fridges and freezers are working appropriately. To ensure that the Production Services Manager/Deputy and Accountable Pharmacist/Deputy is informed of any non-compliance issues.
  • To complete, maintain and file all relevant documents, records and reports as required.
  • To supervise and train any new members of staff within production services as requested by senior members of the team.
  • To carry out routine housekeeping duties within the Production Services department, to include stock checks, stock rotation and expiry date checks.
  • To report any problems or potential problems with the cleanliness or maintenance of clean rooms to a senior member of staff.
  • To deliver and collect items to the wards and other departments.
  • To ensure that all waste is disposed of in accordance with local procedures and national law. To cover the transfer of waste for disposal, some of which is hazardous from the pharmacy to the Viridor collection point.
  • To co-operate and participate in any training and development within production services, attending such study days and courses as necessary for service development.
