An opportunity has arisen for an experienced psychologist to join the Rheumatology Service at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital. You will provide psychological input based upon a biopsychosocial approach.

Specifically, you will provide assessment, therapeutic interventions, educational consultations and psychological support to a range of rheumatology and lupus patients.

The provision of evidenced-based, time-limited psychological interventions to promote psychological well-being and physical health is a key requirement. The service has been running since 2018 and we are proud it is now embedded in our rheumatology practice.


We are a large multi-disciplinary team delivering care to a diverse patient population at all stages of the pathway for rheumatological care.

The job would also include "upskilling" the clinical team to improve recognition / handling of psychological difficulties and direct input into the development of disease specific self-help resources.

Services are based at Guy's Hospital and there is scope for working remotely and less than full time, based on the applicant.

This is a permanent position based at Band 8A.

To be eligible for this role you must be HCPC registered as a practitioner psychologist.

The role will focus on providing and developing the dedicated clinical health psychology service embedded within rheumatology.

The rheumatology psychology service aims to enhance the care of rheumatology patients with psychological comorbidities and long-term conditions including fibromyalgia/chronic pain.

Key responsibilities will include

  • To ensure the systematic provision of a high quality, safe and highly Specialist Psychology Service for rheumatology patients including providing psychological assessment and developing and delivering evidencebased group and individual therapy programmes for our patient populations, including inflammatory arthritis, Lupus and Fibromyalgia.
  • To work within a steppedcare model, managing demand for clinical service within rheumatology and innovating to expand existing services where appropriate.
  • To work closely with the rheumatology MDT providing consultation and training to ensure highquality psychologicallyinformed care across all parts of the service.
  • As required to provide supervision of trainee clinical psychologists and junior staff, inter and multidisciplinary if required.
  • Utilising research skills for audit, policy, service development and research within the service.

The Rheumatology Department, comprising General Rheumatology and the Louise Coote Lupus Unit, is one of the largest departments of its kind in the UK.

The unit consists of 18 consultants (10 WTE), 3 specialist registrars, 3 clinical fellows, 2 foundation programme doctors, 1 Advance Physiotherapist Practitioner, 2 Advanced Nurse practitioners, 3 clinical specialist nurses, 4 nurses, 3 research nurses and 4 healthcare assistants.

We offer a range of specialist clinics linking with several other departments.

The Lupus Unit operates an integrated highly specialised secondary and tertiary care service for lupus, vasculitis and other connective tissue diseases and there is substantial overlap with general rheumatology services.

The Rheumatology department is based in a dedicated outpatient area on the Guy's site where there is also a dedicated infusion unit for both Rheumatology and Lupus patients.

The Department has inpatient beds at St Thomas's hospital and sees cross-specialty referrals at both sites for which there are separate consultant rotas for General Rheumatology and Lupus.

We work closely with the paediatric rheumatology department at the Evelina children's hospital on the ST Thomas' Hospital site with whom we run joint teenage and young adult clinics.


In the department, there are current subspecialist interests and dedicated clinics in early and established inflammatory arthritis, musculoskeletal ultrasound, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, metabolic bone diseases, osteoporosis, vasculitis, SLE, dermatology, myositis, renal, lung and eye disease.

The rheumatoid arthritis clinic achieved an Outstanding Best Practice Award from the British Society for Rheumatology 2013 and the fibromyalgia clinic an Emerging Best Practice Award in 2016.
