This is an exciting opportunity to become an integral part of Gloucestershire Hospitals Theatre team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic team member to join our Recovery team.

The role would consist of working with the wider disciplinary team and delivering safe care to patients. This includes providing pre
- operative and assisting with post operative care to children and adults who come to theatre for surgery. You would be expected to provide patient care, complete basic essential care plans and paperwork, access IT systems, transfer patients to other areas, checking stock levels, general housekeeping and contributing to appropriate infection and prevention control.

  • Great team working skills
  • Ability to work where the work pattern may be unpredictable due to emergency care.
  • Ability to work a flexible shift pattern covering a 7 Day service including weekends and bank holidays
  • Effective communication skills with staff and patients
  • Ensuring appropriate documentation is complete
  • Checking of equipment for safe use.
  • Safe transfer of patients, in line with training and manual handling
  • Use of specialist equipment relevant to recovery.
  • Handling and Delivery of specimens.
  • Maintenance and ordering of stock where appropriate
  • Contribution to appropriate infection & prevention control
  • Handling of Speciality related refuse
  • Use of all related IT systems

We cover a range of operating specialities, including Upper and Lower GI, Breast, Gynaecology, Urology, Vascular, Emergency Surgery,Trauma & Orthopaedics, ENT, Oral and Maxillofacial, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Paediatrics.


Both the emergency and obstetric theatres provide 24/7 service, 365 days a year, and our other specialities work a variety of shifts to cover a 7 day service.

Main Duties & Responsibilities of the Post

To contribute to safe and timely patient transfer process within and out of theatres

To greet surgical patients in the preoperative area, reviewing theatre paperwork and ensuring all documents are met for surgery.

To contribute to the recovery efficiency through active engagement in the movement and delivery of patients, equipment and stock as required

To provide personal care to patients to help make them feel safe and cared for.

Ability to get on well with people at all levels and work effectively as a team member.

To communicate effectively, especially where patient ability to do so is compromised and there are barriers to understanding e.g. hearing difficulties, using tact, persuasion and re-assurance

Occasionally the job holder may be exposed to distressing or emotional circumstances

Take an active role in theatre/recovery decontamination in line with infection control policies

Discretion and understanding of confidentiality and data protection

Understand and adhere to Trust Policies and Procedures

Provide advice and guidance within own sphere of knowledge to other team members
