As part of this investment, we are looking to recruit a
Deputy Head of On-Train on a
full-time, permanent basis, based at
Birmingham New Street.


You will assist the Head of On-Train to deliver train safety, train performance, service reliability and customer satisfaction (NRPS) targets, with lead responsibility for all operational safety and performance matters for the Senior Conductor function.

This is coupled with the essential need to build good working relationships and communication with line managers and union representatives in order to engender employee engagement.


You will be expected to represent the Senior Conductor function with both internal and external stakeholders in the absence of the Head of On Train.


What does the job involve?

  • To lead & direct the Senior Conductor function with responsibility for the improvement on all operational safety, productivity and performance matters.
  • Ensure business objectives relating to train safety, performance, and customer satisfaction through continuous improvement of processes at all Senior Conductor depots are met.
  • Develop the strategy and planning around ongoing compliance with all safety responsibilities for Senior Conductors to comply with all commitments within the WMT Safety Certificate, including competence assessment and verification of Senior Conductors, depot checks, implementation of control measures to contain risks, management of safety standards, maintenance of safety publications and maintenance of safety notice cases.
  • Liaise, support and lead as necessary with internal stakeholders (e.g. Operational Standards) and external stakeholders (e.g. Network Rail) to ensure an integrated and consistent approach to safety within the Conductor Function.
  • Efficient management of Senior Conductor resources and lead on recruitment and competency training, to enable successful deployment in accordance with business requirements.
  • Identify talent and develop a robust succession plan for the Senior Conductor Function
  • Act as the interface between daily operations and projects to ensure business commitments are met and delivered to timescales
  • Support and deploy key activities to maximise employee engagement and job satisfaction.
  • Level 2 (or silver) On Call responsibility.
  • Undertake duties in the absence of Head of On-Train
  • Any other duties commensurate with the post, which may be relevant as required by the company.

What skills and experience do I need to do the job?

  • In depth knowledge of operational safety and quality standards in relation to Senior Conductor function, including Human Factors and Non-Technical Skills as they pertain to rail operations.
  • In depth knowledge of Senior Conductor terms and conditions, with the ability to operate in a highly unionised environment.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of Rail Operations and the factors that can lead to errors and omissions in a real time operational environment.
  • Excellent communication skills with strong negotiation and influencing skills, and an Empathetic approach to evidence gathering.
  • Good working knowledge of West Midlands Trains operations and geography
