Forensic science is used to support the investigation of crime.

It can be used to provide evidence to support or refute an allegation, a version of events and a person's involvement in an offence.

The Digital Forensics Unit (DFU) is committed to providing quality, objective, timely and effective forensic services to inform investigations, in support of our Policing Plan through modern policing, early intervention, supporting victims and witnesses, managing offenders and public confidence.

The Digital Forensic Specialist role is key to delivering the aims of the Force and this opportunity is not to be missed if you have:

  • A genuine passion for technology.
  • Experience of working with data, operating systems and/or digital devices.
  • A need for continuous improvement, enjoying research and development.
  • Desire to help protect the most vulnerable and the wider community, supporting officers and the Criminal Justice System.

As a Digital Forensic Specialist you will have responsibility for the direction, and completion, of digital device examination within the DFU.

You will be reviewing case submissions to understand investigative requirements, defining approach strategies and carrying out examinations to ensure reasonable lines of enquiry are explored successfully.

Such work will be completed in adherence to ISO17025, the Forensic Science Regulator's Codes of Practice and Conduct and Force-specific policies and procedures.

Although there are no direct line management responsibilities for this role, it is expected that direction, coaching and support will be given to the Digital Forensic Investigators and Technicians also working within the team, utilising their skills to support the examination process.

You will be creating reports and statements that feed directly into the Criminal Justice System and will be required to attend Court to present evidence in an expert capacity.

Alongside this you will play a key part in any research and development opportunities, looking to respond proactively to new technology and drive innovation, ensuring that any new methods are devised in line with ISO 17025.

Due to the nature of the role and the casework within the Unit, you will be exposed to indecent images and videos of children, as well as acts of extreme violence.

Robust welfare provision is in place to ensure you are supported in the role.
