A vacancy has arisen within the radiotherapy physics team for a physicist at the start of their career to cover a 3 month secondment leave.

Radiotherapy physics is part of a multi-disciplinary team in a large Cancer Centre.

The Section consists of Clinical Scientists, practitioners in radiotherapy physics, radiographers, linac and computer engineers.

The centre has 7 Varian linear accelerators, a Cyberknife - stereotactic linear accelerator and a brachytherapy suite.

Patient treatments are planned on one of our dedicated wide bore CT scanners with access to, MR and CT-PET imaging within the Paul Strickland Scanner centre.

The department uses both Pinnacle and Eclipse treatment planning systems.


As the post is for 3 months, the successful applicant will be trained to do a limited number of the tasks in the job description in order to support the department, the time spent in a clinical department will give invaluable experience to anyone interested in a future career in radiotherapy physics.

  • To perform some data analysis and processing
  • To undertake runup of the cyberknife treatment machine prior to patient use.
  • Personal initiative, a keen sense of responsibility, manual dexterity and a high degree of accuracy are expected in all duties. Although experience of working with radiation is desirable, it is not a requirement and appropriate training will be provided

  • Perform verification of patient IMRT plans either using a software package or measurement on a treatment machine
  • Perform complex measurements required on the accelerator under the supervision of a physicist.
  • Assist in data analysis, particularly taking personal responsibility for ensuring that all data collected is accurate
  • Store and retrieve measured data
  • Perform initial analysis and judgement on data to ensure that it follows expected trends. For example this may involve entering data in spreadsheets and plotting graphs and comparing results.
  • Assist with the processing of data from one computer format to another
  • Enter data in a variety of computer systems
  • Perform complex treatment plans for a limited range of anatomical sites. These will be checked by a competent member of staff prior to clinical use
  • Assist physicist performing routine complex QA on the current clinical accelerators. This may involve helping collection, assembly and set up of equipment and performing routine tasks under supervision.
  • Assist in routine care and checks of all equipment in use in the department, including appropriate storage.
