The communications officer assist with BACP's communication activities through the robust use of communications channels, both internally and externally.


This role will require the post holder to spend a couple of days per week at our office in Lutterworth and as required, with the rest of the working week from home.


Principal accountabilities:


  • Act as a first point of contact for all media enquiries, promptly co-ordinating responses in line with BACP's communications strategy, escalating to the Communications Manager as appropriate.
  • Build and maintain a strong network of spokespeople; ensuring they are trained and briefed to appropriately speak on behalf of BACP.
  • Work innovatively with colleagues to create reactive and proactive strategies, plans and engaging communications products that support the strategic priorities of BACP and increase our profile and awareness.
  • Research and monitor mental health coverage across communications channels, identifying potential risks and opportunities to the Communications Manager.
  • Collate, analyse and disseminate relevant communications coverage internally, producing metrics on BACP communications.
  • Develop and maintain a network of influencers to enhance the impact of BACP communication.
  • Assist with the management of BACP channels including but not limited to: news elements of BACP's website, internal comms and social media ensuring they are regularly updated, fit for purpose and maintain an effective presence.
  • Create multimedia communications products for a range of channels to support the BACP communications strategy, using creativity and innovation to develop the channels.

Knowledge & experience:


  • Educated to degree level or possessing an equivalent professional qualification in journalism or public relations.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working in a communications role.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Ability to research, analyse and summarise information and complex issues into a clear, concise, accurate and accessible form.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills demonstrating an ability to organise and prioritise own work, to be flexible and adaptable to prevailing demands and tight deadlines, while delivering to agreed standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills with an ability to communicate at all levels and nurture good working relationships to maximise networking opportunities.
  • Extensive experience of constructing responses to media enquiries, writing and issuing press releases and statements.
  • Experienced in the use of Microsoft Office, design and multimedia software e.g. elements of Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Experience of creating and editing video and audio content.
  • An awareness of the role of media activity in a membership organisation.
  • A good understanding of media distribution services and contact management systems to analytics tools and blogging platforms.
