The starting salary for this role is £32,798 per annum for a working 36 hour working week.


Environment, Transport and Infrastructure's (ETI) overall purpose is to enable safe, reliable journeys and sustainable, prosperous places both now and in the future.

We do this through our Environment Service, Highways and Transport Service.


About Us


The Road Safety and Sustainable School Travel Team sits within the Highways Service but works across the entire ETI directorate.


The Team consists of four sub teams:

a Road Safety Engineering Team (responsible for highway improvements at collision hotspots and safety audits), Safer Travel Team (responsible for road safety education in schools, school travel planning and school crossing patrols), Cycle Training Team (responsible for providing cycle training, primarily via schools) and the Safety Enforcement Team (responsible for the maintenance and implementation of safety cameras and supporting the police in prioritising enforcement resources).

The aim of the team is to reduce road casualties and antisocial road user behaviour, and promote more walking and cycling and active travel to schools.


This role will be working in the
Safer Travel Team who successfully work on a number of projects within our schools.

We are a small, friendly, motivated, high performing team who are highly regarded across the directorate.


We also lead on a process to assess road safety outside schools, assess the safety of routes to schools and manage the school crossing patrol service.

We work closely with a range of other teams in the ETI Directorate including Highways, Transport Policy, Major Schemes, Passenger Transport and Transport Development Control.

We also work regularly with teams across the wider Council including both Schools Admissions and Property services.


Our team regularly responds to queries from County Council members and schools and also works with District and Borough colleagues, members and parish councils.


About the Role


The Safer Travel Officer role is based at Quadrant Court in Woking but the post holder is required to travel around the county to visit highway sites and attend meetings at various offices, so the post holder will require a valid driving licence.

There may be occasional conferences and training to attend elsewhere in the country too.

As a customer facing service, the needs of customers are at the heart of everything we do.

A key responsibility of this role is to carry out road safety outside schools assessments, safety of route checks, assist where necessary with the development and implementation of the new pedestrian training programme for Surrey schools participating in the nationally recognised Modeshift STARS School Travel Plan scheme.


About You


You will have a good track record of communicating with different stakeholders in a variety of settings as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.

You will have the opportunity to use your proven problem-solving skills and ability to exercise high levels of initiative to devise and implement workable solutions.


  • Educated to 'A' level, HND standard or equivalent or able to evidence ability at an equivalent level
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, practices and policies applicable to specialist area
  • Excellent IT skills, including MS Office and database management systems
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to build sound relationships with customers
  • Previous practical experience in a relevant field
  • Ability to manage a range of projects through to completion
  • Effective interpersonal, influencing and negotiation skills
