Industrial Relations Officer

About the role:
The British Medical Association (BMA) is the trade union for doctors in the UK.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Industrial Relations Officer to join our team covering the Devon and Cornwall areas.


The IRO is the lead BMA negotiating Official for their patch, working closely with locally elected representatives to represent the collective interests of employed doctors to their employers.


This role will play an integral role in the area in support of the BMA's 'five pillars' strategy which prioritises high membership; supporting and developing reps; high visibility in the workplace and effective negotiation and representation.


The role will negotiate terms and conditions at a local level, alongside working to improve local organisation, recruitment and retention of members.

The IRO may also be asked to manage a regional support officer.


As the role is based in the Southwest of England (Devon and Cornwall) it is a requirement for the successful applicant to be based within the region or within a commutable distance.

Attendance at meetings at a variety of locations (e.g. hospitals & trusts) across the region will be required.

To be successful as an Industrial Relations Officer you'll have:

  • A up to date knowledge of industrial relations
- experience of collective bargaining and negotiating terms and conditions of employment
- an understanding of the importance of effectively organising, recruiting and retaining members in order to maximise the union's strength
- experience of representing members or providing similar transferable advocacy

  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and relationship building skills
- the ability to manage competing demands and implement a national strategy within your area of responsibility

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A team player who is selfmotivated
