The Role


Our security team play a pivotal role in ensuring that our students, visitors, and colleagues have a safe and enjoyable experience on campus.

Integral to the work of the security team is the work of the CCTV operators.

Working in a team of four you will have the opportunity for development, and we will fund your SIA licence as well as pay a 20% shift allowance on top of your basic salary.

In this role you will operate and monitor all systems, including the University CCTV System, within the Control Centre in a professional and efficient manner.

Provide an emergency response service to Schools/Services throughout the University.

To ensure integrity, accuracy and confidentiality of all information gained by compliance with the University CCTV Code of Practice and Operating Instructions, whilst preserving the rights of the individual.

To provide an emergency response service via radio and telephone networks to Schools/Services throughout the University. As part of the requirements for the role, shift work and some overtime will be required.

Key Accountabilities
To operate and monitor all systems within the Security Control Centre in an efficient manner ensuring that all work is undertaken in compliance with GDPR, the University CCTV Code of Practice & Operating Instructions whilst ensuring the rights of individuals are preserved
To liaise with the Police, other agencies, and members of staff to ensure the appropriate use of the system
To record online all incidents, events and actions taken in a clear, legible, and accurate written format. To provide an efficient and courteous radio and telephone answering service and deal efficiently with all enquiries
To report equipment failure to the Duty Team Leader /Deputy to optimise operation of the system
To support the Estate Security Manager and supervisory staff by providing the monitoring of the maintenance programme to ensure full and continuous provision of the system
To be aware of your responsibilities in terms of health and safety, including identification of appropriate health and safety training at annual Performance Development Reviews
To assist in ideas about the future development of the Control Room and University CCTV systems
To assist with management of recorded data, including preview, image retrieval, archiving and production to authorised agencies of digital images, alarm monitoring and response with compliance to GDPR
To attend Court to give evidence as per any written statements provided, when required
To assist in the provision of an emergency response service via radio and telephone networks to Schools/Support Services throughout the University
To operate according to the Department's core values, mission statement, codes of behaviour
Any other duties which may reasonably be required which are appropriate to the post covered by this job description

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Maintain an up to date knowledge of legal practices and guidelines including identification of offences, data protection act, human rights issues, health and safety and University policies in accordance with security guidelines
Can demonstrate an understanding of the importance of handling sensitive data
Ability to concentrate keenly on the job in hand for extended periods
Clear diction and an ability to work under pressure in periods of intense activity, as part of a team
Be able to operate on your own initiative or as part of a team
Clear, legible handwriting
Good clear and concise communication at all levels, as well as interpersonal and customer care skills, including the ability to use radios to communicate with team members
Good powers of observation
Good knowledge of IT, particularly data input, retrieval, and Microsoft office skills
Ability to operate a joystick and computer keyboard
The ability to embrace change, in an evolving organisation, to the benefit of the University Community
Previous experience of working in a customer focused environment
