Danes Hill School is widely recognised as one of the leading co-educational day preparatory schools in the country.

Situated in 55 acres of landscaped ground in the village of Oxshott, Surrey, Danes Hill provides boys and girls aged 3 to 13 with a dynamic and exciting education.


Job title:
Head of Grounds and Onsite Caretaker

Job purpose:
Proactive management of the grounds of Danes Hill School, including playing fields and gardens. This is to include the playing fields used by Bevendean (pre prep site) and our forest school. Leading on out-of-hours site management.


Reporting to:
Estates Director


Hours:
Full time (40 hours per week, worked across the week in shifts agreed with the line manager). This role is all year round, during both school terms and school holidays.
Annual leave (25 days a year plus bank holidays) should be booked during the school holiday periods. Weekend and evening working will be required.

Job Specification

Grounds management duties and responsibilities

  • Caring for and maintaining the sports pitches including liaising with the Director of Sport and games teachers as to ensure that, wherever possible, the surfaces are available to meet the requirements of the fixtures programme. These include allweather tennis and sports pitches.
  • Maintaining and managing the hard landscape and gardens areas on both sites.
  • Liaising with the Estates Director on any issues relating to the grounds.
  • Line managing the grounds team (4), dealing with holiday, sickness, and day to day tasks.
  • Ensuring that all staff are properly trained and undertaking annual appraisals.
  • Being responsible for the daytoday health and safety needs of the department and ensuring compli
- ance with relevant legislation.

  • Preparing departmental risk assessments, COSHH documents and machinery maintenance records.
  • Advising key stakeholders on play and no play decisions.
  • Preparing, managing, and monitoring the grounds management budget including capital expenditure projects where necessary.
  • Negotiating, purchasing, and managing the safe storage of all consumable materials.
  • Being responsible for the tendering and management of contractors undertaking grounds services including specifying work and ensuring compliance with health and safety and other statutory require
- ments.

  • Being responsible for trees and their maintenance and external fences.
  • Maintaining pathways and access points.
  • Attending weekly coordination meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Delivering snow & ice clearance of pathways and roads as required.
  • Delivering friendly, informed and responsive communication in line with normal expectations of the
Head of Grounds role.


On-site duties and responsibilities

  • Managing site security and carrying out fire and safety precautions across multiple sites.
  • Carrying out general building maintenance duties to ensure the site meets required standards including minor plumbing repairs & grounds maintenance duties out of hours.
  • Being responsible for locking and unlocking of grounds for weekend fixtures.
  • Being responsible for locking and unlocking of School premises for out of hours events and weekends (drama productions, commercial lets etc.
  • Coordinating car parking duties for weekend events.

Other key duties and responsibilities

  • Ensuring that a positive impression of the School is given to pupils, parents, visitors and colleagues at all times.
  • Establishing and maintaining efficient and effective working relationships with the wider community of the School.
  • Supporting the work of the Estates department, and delivering its strategic outcomes.

  • Playing a full part in the life of the school community, supporting its mission, ethos and policies.
  • Setting high personal standards of dress and appearance, attendance/punctuality and discipline/behaviour, upholding the staff code of conduct at all times.

Qualifications
