Job description
We are currently recruiting 2x Shift Skilled Borer/Machinist to join our team. One role is on permanent basis and one is a 3 year fixed-term contract.


Location:
Cardiff


Salary:
£31,000.32/ year inclusive of 20% shift allowance - £16.56/h

Working hours: 36h/ week (any hours worked above 36h/week will be classed as overtime and paid accordingly)


Work schedule:


  • Week one: Monday
  • Thursday 6:00am 2:00pm; Friday 6:00am 12:00pm


  • Week two: Monday

  • Thursday 2:00pm 10:00pm; Friday 12:00pm 6:00pm

PURPOSE OF THE JOB


A machinist is responsible for setting up and operating a range of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successful completion of an apprenticeship, or equivalent (minimum NVQ Level 3), in a relevant discipline.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Read and understand engineering drawings and have the ability to mark out/machine components from them.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using relevant measuring instruments.
  • Use precision tools, machinery and equipment such as lathe, vertical and horizontal borers.
  • Manufacture rail vehicle components.
  • Where relevant, program/operate NC/CNC machines tools.
  • Properly and safely select, align, secure and remove holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.
  • Recognise, deploy and properly use inserts, fixtures and tooling.
  • Examine and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications using appropriate tooling.
  • Perform daily and regular cleaning and maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment.
  • Comply with all quality policies, specifications, regulations and instructions.
  • Perform all tasks in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Participate as and when required in onetoone meetings and undertake, as appropriate, courses/training/other developmental activities, relevant to the role.
  • Keep up to date with developments within the Company and other sectorwide practices, that influence the daytoday activities within the role, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and any other relevant internal/external factors (e.g. Company policies and procedures, Quality Management standards, Health and Safety).
  • Ensure, in the course of employment, complete confidentiality is maintained in respect of the Company, its dealings, transactions and all other information relating to clients/customers/staff etc.


In addition to the duties and responsibilities outlined, you must be prepared to undertake such additional duties which may result from changing circumstances, but which may not of necessity change the general character or level of responsibility to the post.


SKILLS and EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in industrial/heavy engineering.
  • Ability to use measuring equipment and read engineering drawings.
  • Ability to use machine tools including lathe, milling machines, drills vertical borer etc. and essential the use of horizontal borer.
  • Able to follow a preplanned schedule of work / instructions/procedures in place.
  • A genuine commitment to achieving high standards and an eye for detail to monitor the quality of work done.
  • Able to carry out manual handling duties.
  • Good problemsolving skills.
  • Knowledge and experience of promoting safe working practices in a safety critical workplace.
  • The ability to maintain accurate records.
  • A team player but also able to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work under pressure maintaining a high level of accuracy and detail.
  • Able to work flexibly across the working week, including a shift pattern when required, and work across a broad range of activities as the role evolves.
