The consultant will play a crucial role in supporting businesses to reduce their carbon emissions, develop decarbonisation plans and support the delivery of an online training programme
- "Cut Carbon Cut Costs" to support the City of York to achieve its 2030 net zero targets.


This is a Fixed Term Contract until 31/03/2025

Key Responsibilities Include:


  • Work with The City of York Council and the Green Economy's dedicated communications staff to further develop visibility in York, promote the programme, manage a pipeline of businesses, and develop case studies.
  • Undertake detailed discussions with client around complex business issues to understand their business challenges, making sound recommendations for appropriate actions that will lead to more sustainable business practises, mitigate risks associated with climate change, and create opportunities.
  • Conduct detailed site review to identify, quantify and prioritise opportunities and actions that can be undertaken by the business to improve efficiency and reduce the business carbon footprint and save money. This will involve the analysis and interpretation of business and market data/intelligence to provide recommendations to senior management teams, boards, and shareholders.
A typical audit would include but not limited to:

a) Lighting, building fabric, heating, cooling.

b) Refrigeration and thermal processes.

c) Renewable energy assessment/feasibility.

d) Fuel and fleet, sustainable travel and transport.

e) Compressed air, processed energy use (motors, drives, pumps, fans).

f) Waste.

  • Production of a decarbonisation report to detail the review findings with prioritised action plan for the business to implement with support from the consultant.
  • Work with the relevant businesses closely to monitor any outputs including jobs safeguarded, number of businesses implementing new technologies, and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Have specialist, technical expertise alongside excellent communication and people skills, to articulate the benefits of the transition to a low carbon economy to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Professional experience and approach to managing and delivering business assessment, advice, and development to support businesses to decarbonise.
  • At least degree level business education, or degree level qualification with a management body or the relevant business experience to match those.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the key challenges, opportunities and market failures associated with carbon emission reduction in businesses.
  • Experience working in partnership with stakeholders to deliver programmes of work, including ideally Local Authorities.
  • Professional experience and approach to managing and delivering business assessment, advice, and development.

Skills Required:


  • Experience in supporting business to identify and implement energy and resource efficiency projects that can help businesses to reduce their carbon footprint.
  • Knowledge of the legislative and regulatory framework in relation to resource efficiency.
  • Welldeveloped IT skills, including an understanding of computerised management.
  • Practical understanding of the current landscape of publicly funded business support and investments of relevance to the agenda.
  • Welldeveloped IT skills, including an understanding of client management.

This post will be funded until under the UKSPF programme.
