Overview:


The MoJ Property Directorate is a customer focused organisation that exists to enable our customers to perform to their very best.

We do this by providing high quality, easy to use services, and working environments that our customers want to work in, which support them to deliver their individual outputs efficiently.

Our job is to manage one of the most diverse and complex estates in Government - hosted by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ).

The MoJ Property Directorate brings together a property portfolio including Prisons, Probation, and MoJ HQ and Arm's Length Bodies. We also provide property services on behalf of the Home Office.


MoJ Property provides specialist services including facilities management, health and safety, fire safety and security, technical design expertise, and sustainability.

We also have business management teams who support the entire Directorate and each of our partners is supported by account management teams.

We are responsible for a great deal - our portfolio consists of properties valued at £8.5bn for the MoJ alone.

We are part of the Government Property Profession (GPP) and through active membership and engagement we will work with the Office of Government Property to develop the maturity of the profession and also encourage our people to join the GPP.

We continue to deliver new ways of working across our portfolio - leading on the scale and pace of activity for central government - proposing ways to achieve, and then providing more dynamic and flexible workspace, while driving down the cost of the estate.


Team Overview:

HMCS property manages a large court estate, including several historic buildings. This is based on a regional structure with central overview and advice. Responsibility for new acquisitions and freehold disposals providing professional advice (including Landlord & Tenant) as required. Ensure that integration opportunities are taken to rationalise the estate.

Management of our legal service contracts, including deed management. Ensuring compliance with GPU controls.

Advising on property investment decisions. Co-ordination of property valuations and rating.

Property information is maintained, including e-PIMS, backlog maintenance, courtroom audit, benchmarking etc. Provision of advice on strategy and property investment.

Responsibility for accommodation standards, including DDA compliance.

Management of Judges' Lodgings including budgets, HR, Licence negotiations and benchmarking.


This is a residential post where live-in accommodation will be provided at a cost of 8.5% of the basic wage.


All hours staff are awarded extra duty allowance based on the number of weeks judges are in residence at the site.


Job Description, Duties and Responsibilities:


Responsibilities will include the following:


  • Effective planning with the Chef ensuring that all domestic staff are appropriately deployed.
  • Effective communication with the Judge and Clerk, ensuring requirements/needs are met.
  • Ensuring that the Lodgings cleanliness is maintained to the highest standards at all times.
  • Ordering supplies, ensuring VFM with the Chef and monitor their use (washing up liquid, toilets cleaner etc).
  • Monitor the standard of linen etc from the laundry or in house washing ensuring sufficient stock levels are available.
  • Ensure that the Judges personnel laundry is processed efficiently in house and within a reasonable time.
  • Liaise with the Chef about the number of Judges, Clerks and guests to be in residence, arrival times and anticipated length of stay.
  • Liaise with the Judge in conjunction with the Chef about dinner or lunch parties regarding menus and timings.
  • Answer the telephone and deal with any queries where possible, take messages and pass these on to the appropriate person.
  • Work (as many hours as necessary) "All hours" to ensure the effective running of the house whilst the Judge is in residence. When there are no Judges in residence provide 9 to 5 site presence.
  • To attend managers meetings.
  • Purchasing within budgets ensuring VFM and maintaining appropriate stock levels of wines and spirits in conjunction with Chef manager.
  • During Judicial vacation periods ensure the effective cleaning of the lodgings.
  • You will be required to travel, cover and sleep at other sites ensuring the lodgings networks availability to the Judiciary (covering sick absence etc).

Weekly returns are submitted close of play every Friday and posted for process by Tuesday of the following week.

All changes to sittings at site to be immediately reported to the office.
