About the Company


Bairds Malt Limited was formed in March 1999, when two existing companies, Hugh Baird & Sons Limited and Moray Firth Maltings plc, merged to form a new company.

We currently operate four malting plants within the UK and produce malt primarily for the brewing and distilling industries.

Approximately 10% of our malt is exported to customers around the world who want to use British malt in their brewing or distilling operations.


Our merchanting business, Scotgrain Agriculture Limited, procures malting barley for our own use and trades in barley, other grains, and related agricultural commodities.

SUMMARY OF JOB
Responsible to the Plant Manager, the individual would be required to cover different areas depending on business needs.


HOURS:

42.5 hours Monday to Friday with a half hour paid break


RESPONSIBILITIES

Weighbridge
-
Laboratory Analysis_

  • Prepare samples ready for analysis and organise daily workload accordingly.
  • Perform routine quality control analysis, germination, moisture, nitrogen and screenings accurately and efficiently according to company methods while adhering to current safety procedures and any necessary rechecks.
  • Record raw data and final results concisely and neatly in appropriate laboratory documentation.
  • Interpret data against contract specification and take appropriate allowances.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment to a necessary operational standard and calibration status.
  • Prepare standard reagents and equipment necessary to perform routine QC analysis.
  • Ensure workplace is clean and tidy in order that analysis can be performed safely and effectively.
  • Ensure that laboratory reference samples are stored properly and labelled with correct information.
  • Understand and operate the company's quality management system relating to the laboratory function.

Weighbridge_

  • Weighing barley containers/lorries at intake and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Loading of barley containers/lorries and operation of appropriate machinery.
  • Liaising with hauliers and merchants regarding claims.
  • Input results to AX system.

Hplant

  • Production of malt as per instructions from malting management, including steeping, germination and kilning operations
  • Running kilned malt to final store as instructed by management
  • Carry out malt turns as requested (evenings and weekends)
  • Carry out required checks on Effluent Plant (evenings and weekends)
  • Operation of pelleter
  • Operation of essential barley plant as required
  • Assist with the commissioning of new and modified plant as appropriate
  • Coordinate the correct addition of process aides and record usage
  • Assist in maintaining the general cleanliness of working areas and plant, including steep tanks, germination walkways, rails, turners and any other designated areas
  • Investigation of faults as the occur to determine likely resolution

Roast House

  • Production of roasted products as instructed by malting management, including operation of filling equipment, roasting drum, cooler and product storage plant, streets and turners
  • Liaison with barley and malting staff to determine availability of raw materials
  • Running the roaster drums to achieve the colour and quality of product required by the malting management
  • Movement of the product to final store as instructed
  • Sampling of product and ensuring prompt delivery of sample to Malt lab
  • General cleanliness of roast house and green malt production areas, conveying equipment, inside roasting drums, coolers, streets and turners
  • Completion of all necessary record keeping on computer and roasters book, in accordance with quality procedures including booking consumed malt batches off system
  • Greasing of no.3 and no.4 roasting machines

General

  • Liaison with malting management to report any production anomalies and be familiar with the latest instructions and procedures.
  • Completion of all necessary production record keeping in accordance with quality procedures.
  • Liaise with engineering staff to report and assist in identifying operational issues.
  • Assist other Technicians, Fitters and Sub-Contractors as necessary.
  • Carry out other duties in other areas of the Witham plant, as required.
