Due to internal movement we are recruiting a Refuge Support Worker

  • Out of hours to support the provision of a safe, professional and supportive service for women, children and young people within our refuge accommodation who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse.

Key duties and responsibilities:

Delivering high quality one to one support services to women, children and young people who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse by:

  • Effectively assessing referrals to the service (in conjunction with other professionals and colleagues), completing risk assessments and admitting women, children and young people to our refuge accommodation.
  • Assessing, with the woman, her support and safety requirements and developing with her a support package which is tailored to her risks and needs, and which takes a culturally sensitive approach.
  • Providing practical and emotional support in an empowering and nonjudgemental way as part of a planned input to support women to recover from domestic abuse.
  • Taking a trauma informed approach to support, creating a safe environment for women and any accompanying children who use Wigtownshire Women's Aid service.
  • Responding appropriately and empathically to women who are emotional or in a distressed state.
  • Accurately and appropriately advising women of their welfare rights, legal rights, housing options, benefits and child support options.
  • Providing accurate and relevant information to enable women to make informed choices and decisions.
  • Signposting women appropriately to other support services when necessary to ensure all of her needs are met.
  • Implementing support plans and ensure these and case notes are kept up to date and as per Wigtownshire Women's Aid guidelines.
  • Working in a confidential manner and following all processes in relation to data protection.
  • Planning delivering and evaluating high-quality group work to women, children and young people who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse.
  • Liaising with Children and Young People's Workers and other workers to ensure that appropriate support is provided to address the identified need of any child or young person in the refuge.
  • Providing information and advice to other professionals, agencies, and individuals on domestic abuse and Wigtownshire Women's Aid services in order to increase referrals.
  • Developing effective relationships and good links with external agencies and organisations to help ensure the best support is provided to each service user.
  • Providing telephone on-call support during out-of-hours periods on a team rotational basis.
  • Participating in and supporting the Service Manager with the monitoring and planning of the service, especially in response to the feedback of women, children and young people and producing reports as required.
  • Supporting and participating in the continuous improvement of the service.
  • Working to the Scottish Social Services Council code of practice for support workers and national standards for housing support services
  • Working to Wigtownshire Women's Aid policies and procedures including ensuring all health & safety processes are followed.
  • Actively participating in personal and team development including attending support and supervision, team meetings, training and appraisals.
  • Any other aspect relating to the role and as requested by the Service Manager and/or CEO.


The nature and size of Wigtownshire Women's Aid means that all workers must recognise the need for a flexible response to the work.

General Information:


Education & Qualification


SVQ Level 3 Social Services and Health care or equivalent professional qualification or willing to work towards this qualification which meets SSSC registration requirements for Support Workers in Housing Support Services.

Understanding of domestic abuse and the effects of abuse on women and children.

Full UK driving licence required for this post.
