Job Introduction

To ensure the BBC acquires, creates and distributes Intellectual Property (IP) to maximise audience value and commercial return in a digital, global and commercial environment by:

  • Delivering and implementing commercial, rights and business affairs activities
  • Implementing and ensuring compliance with rights policies and frameworks
  • Contracting and assisting with negotiation of complex deals with contributors and music rights holders
  • Building and maintaining internal and external relationships and partnerships


The role requires a 'one BBC' approach with close teamwork and/or embedded ways of working with all Divisions across the organisation.

This is central to our purpose and culture and is critical to this role.

Main Responsibilities
-
Negotiating and contracting: To independently draft, interpret and negotiate complex contracts for deals including agreements with all types of contributor rights holders, digital media contracts and acquisition agreements with creative partners. The team deal with the clearance of music rights as well as business areas such as Changed Format rights, gaming, merchandise, clips, promos and any new methods of exploitation.

Rights management:To independently advise on complex issues including contributor fees, contract terms, copyright clearance, writers and changed format deals, union agreements, framework agreements, negotiating fees and contracting. To undertake copyright clearance on existing material.

Project management: To be responsible for significant deals and work areas, and delivering longer-term projects and initiatives, and managing peer and senior stakeholders relationships.

Research: To undertake detailed research projects such as researching business, market, policy and legal issues and providing advice on key business implications of proposed activity.

Stakeholder management: To foster and develop collaborative, creative and commercial relationships - both external (including agents, rights-owning bodies and collecting societies) and internal (including BBC Studios).

Compliance: To ensure that standards and frameworks are adhered to and translated into compliant individual deals within a pan
  • BBC approach.
To ensure all commercial activity is consistent with BBC Fair Trading policy and regulatory requirements.

Market intelligence:To monitor and utilise global market trends in order to enhance the overall effectiveness and credibility of CRBA.

Teamwork: To provide day-to-day support for CRBA Executives and Business Affairs Manager. To seek out opportunities for maximising CRBA impact in an increasingly digital, global and commercial media environment. To lead by example in supporting new ways of working. To help, guide and develop other members of the team and take on any line management as may be required.

Risk management: To assist with mitigating legal, contractual and business affairs risk, brand and IP protection.

Systems and record keeping: To produce contractual documentation and ensure information on relevant BBC systems are current and maintained. To ensure accurate and current record keeping, authorise and oversee contractual payments (as appropriate).

Deputising: To deputise for Business Affairs Manager and act up as required.


Essential

  • Comprehensive knowledge of, and experience in, broadcast and digital media.
  • Knowledge of current market intelligence and global media trends.
  • Some legal knowledge and experience (copyright focused) proven ability to interpret and draft contracts.
  • Contracting and copyright experience with indepth experience in all contributor rights, including actors, writers and music copyright.
  • Proven influencing, persuading or negotiating skills including with senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Extensive experience of developing and maintaining strong, collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good attention to detail and the ability to examine and present complex information.
