Hours:
Required to work on an ad hoc casual basis. Working hours vary from week to week and will include late nights where event/bar work is concerned.

Role Summary


The role is working as part of our high profile Front of House team, providing a high quality experience for customers of The Old Vic.


The purpose of the post is working as part of our show-bar, post-show and late-night bar and catering operation, providing a high quality of service to patrons across our wine, beer, spirits and cocktail menus.


Your Team


The Theatre Management team is responsible for all non-production related aspects of the Theatre - including Front of House and bar operations, facilities, health and safety, access and sustainability.

The team includes the Director of Operations and External Relationships, Director of Theatre Management and Customer Experience, Front of House Manager, Bar Project Manager, Operations Administration Manager, Payroll Coordinator/Operations Administration Coordinator, Theatre Administrator, Facilities Manager, Assistant Facilities Manager, Stage Door Manager, Stage Door Keeper, FOH Duty Managers, Duty Bar Managers, FOH Supervisors, Ushers and Bar Staff.

The post holder reports to the Front of House Manager. By the nature of the post, s/he will work and support all departments of The Old Vic Group.


Areas of responsibility
The Front of House Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Working as part of the Front of House team (Bar and Usher)
  • Welcoming patrons in a polite and enthusiastic manner.
  • Proving patrons with accurate information, correct directions and effective assistance and help, as required in all parts of the House.
  • Maintaining a customer friendly, safe environment in which the public can enjoy the performances.
  • Contributing to the delivery of a great audience experience by providing outstanding service, enhancing our reputation.

_ Product Knowledge_

  • Ability to change beer barrels and have a basic understanding of the beer dispense system.
  • A strong working knowledge of different wine styles and winemaking techniques. Able to quality control check wine so our service is always exemplary.
  • A working knowledge of spirits, fortified wines and liquors and how they're made.
  • An invested interest in the products we sell at The Old Vic and the ability to match drinks to customer tastes and preference.
  • Ability to use the Coffee Machine and produce a widerange of coffee serve types.
  • An invested interested in the different menus and regularly attending tasting sessions and experimental sessions.

_ Licensing_

  • Able to identify where both the full license and premises license summary reside.
  • Understanding of our onlicense and offlicense regulations, and operational hours.
  • Have signed the Old Vic Challenge 25 Policy.
  • Able to correctly identify the acceptable proof of age documents and read them correctly.
  • Understand their responsibility in upholding the 4 main licensable objectives. Health & Safety
  • Manual Handling trained.
  • COSHH Trained and able to demonstrate a strong working knowledge of the different chemicals we have and their uses. Able to identify where the PPE is kept and correctly able to use it.
  • Work with the Bar and Catering Operations Manager to ensure you are abreast of all emergency procedures in place at The Old Vic at any time.
  • Attend regular training sessions and seminars as relevant and requested by the Director of Operations and External Relationships, e.g. ACT, SCAN, Project Diffuse, WAVE
  • Food Safety Manual System
  • Food Hygiene Level 2 Trained
  • FSA Allergen Trained and able to identify the 14 major allergens.
  • Understanding of our FSMS and their individual responsibilities within in, able to complete the cleaning schedules, temperature check and record correctly, and the upkeep of the daily bar diaries.
  • Identifying fault equipment or poor practice and feedback any concerns to the duty bar managers.

  • Previous experience of working in a bar or café environment, working with alcoholic products and customer service
  • A positive 'can do' approach and strong relationship building skills across departments.
