Job summary:

We are looking for a Quality Coordinator who will take a national lead role for the co-ordination and support of all staff within the Food Water and Environmental Microbiology Service (FWEMS) to:

  • Coordinate the maintenance of multi-site accreditation to ISO assessed by UKAS), as well as accreditation and certification to other quality standards as appropriate and ensure statutory requirements are met
  • Support the laboratories in achieving extensions to the scope of accreditation as required
  • Achieve a consistent culture of continuous quality improvement for all aspects of the work
  • Ensure that consistent and uniform best practice is achieved throughout the Service
You will be required to travel to each of the three FW&E laboratories several times each year to assist with audits and quality support on site


Job description:

Your key responsibilities will include

***To become familiar with all aspects of the work of the FWEMS and ensure that the quality systems in place across the service are effective and maintain an environment of continual quality improvement

  • To ensure that the quality objectives set by the Lead FWE Microbiologist are understood and implemented across the network
  • To keep the Lead FWE Microbiologist informed about any quality related issues which might impact on the quality of work undertaken within the service or might impact on their ability to maintain UKAS accreditation
  • To provide a national lead to ensure compliance with relevant quality policies and procedures used within the FWEMS and with relevant accreditation standards: especially
  • ISO 17025, as well as Health Care Commission Standards, clinical governance, corporate governance, risk management, and Caldicott requirements
  • To plan and implement a consistent and uniform approach to quality and quality standards across the FWEMS
  • To support and supervise FW&E staff and, where appropriate, perform quality assurance activities (including internal and external quality audits against ISO 17025 and any other relevant standards)
  • To facilitate quality improvements and act on team improvement suggestions where necessary
  • To provide national and local support in the monitoring of quality assurance activities, assessing their effectiveness and resolving quality improvement issues in a timely fashion

Person specification:


Working as a Quality Coordinator you will provide national and local support in the monitoring of quality assurance activities, assessing their effectiveness and resolving quality improvement issues in a timely fashion.

You will attend and provide practical support and preparation for inspections by UKAS and other third-party assessors (including commercial organisations or research councils with whom collaborative and contract work is being undertaken) and to assist in resolving quality issues with national consistency arising from these inspections.

The role requires you to coordinate the National FWEMS Quality Support Team and local teams and attend or lead quality meetings (including Management Reviews) as required.

This role requires you to develop, implement and maintain a consistent national strategy for quality related developments throughout the FWEMS which includes all parts of the service delivery (e.g. sampling, transport, testing, reporting and research)


You will develop and establish a process in liaison with the Food and Environmental Proficiency Testing Unit to ensure that EQA Schemes, standard reference materials and validation materials are available and fit for purpose.

The post holder will be required to ensure the National IT infrastructure maintains a quality management system which allows auditable information on continuity of testing together with information on training, safety and competency


This role offers the opportunity to take an active role in communicating quality issues as part of the induction of new staff within the team.

To also develop and maintain quality information pages for the FWEMS on UKHSA intranet and internet as appropriate.
