We are looking to appoint a Democratic Services and Governance Officer to join our high performing democratic services (committees) and scrutiny team in Croydon.


With excellent administrative and organisation skills you will need to be self-motivated with strong attention to detail and drive to complete competing tasks to a high standard.


As part of the Democratic Services team, you will have experience in good governance, developing strong relationships and winning the confidence of Members, officers, and other stakeholders.


You will be part of the democratic services team which is responsible for managing formal decision-making within the Council, ensuring this area runs smoothly, effectively and supports the wider goals of the organisation.

There is also a general responsibility across the team to support each other within the service as a whole.


Initially the post holder will have a focus on delivering committee support (agenda management, publication, minute taking, clerking support) for the Council's scrutiny related committees and sub-committees.

No previous scrutiny specific experience or knowledge is required.

The role is to support the range of Committees and Council meetings taking place, as well as supporting the council's overall decision making, governance and committee related and associated functions.

Overall, the post holder, with support and direction of the senior team, will be responsible for a number of decision-making areas of the service:

  • Ensuring logistics of the Council's various Committees meetings run smoothly and are compliant with local government regulations, including accurate and good quality minutes.
  • Ensuring that the formal decisionmaking processes are made correctly and are compliant with local government regulations.
  • Giving guidance and support on statutory and procedural issues to Councillors and officers.
  • Working with officers and Councillors to ensure statutory deadlines and requirements are met in relation to all decision making processes.
  • Working closely with Chairs of relevant Committees to ensure work programmes and scheduled meetings are properly constituted and run effectively throughout the municipal year.
  • Helping to ensure implementation of key corporate projects and strategies meet the relevant statutory requirements around decision making and other considerations.
  • Proactively working and liaising across departments to manage committee work programmes.
