Job Purpose

To train under the Modern Apprentice programme as a Mechanical Engineering Technician working in the mechanical workshop for the School of Engineering providing technical support for research projects and teaching activities using a range of machinery, equipment, and other technological skills learned in the School of Engineering.

You will be required to attend a 20-week basic training program at EKGTA training centre in East Kilbride which includes certified completion of SVQ 2 units.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To operate Mechanical Engineering Workshop machine tools under the supervision of senior technical staff including; lathes, milling machines, grinders, drills, saws, guillotines and bending machines.
  • To manufacture, assemble and test mechanical and electro-mechanical apparatus and equipment for research and teaching, working from drawings and verbal instruction as directed by the workshop manager.
  • To use standard Mechanical Engineering Workshop hand tools and measuring equipment in a competent manner so that standards of accuracy are maintained, and specified tolerances met. (e.g., Micrometers, Vernier Callipers, Height Gauges, Bore Micrometers etc.).
  • To carry out various metal joining techniques in a safe and competent manner e.g., Soft/Hard Soldering, Brazing, Electric Arc, MIG and TIG Welding.
  • To help carry out routine maintenance and repairs on workshop equipment and apparatus used in teaching and research laboratories.
  • To comply with both local and wider University Health and safety policies and adhere to recognised procedures as laid down in risk assessments.
  • To assist senior technicians who deliver Engineering Application (EA) labs to first-year students in the School.
  • To undertake any other duties within the School or College assigned by managers.

Learning and Development

This is a training post and as such you will be required to work towards the outcomes of the modern apprentice programme including successful completion of SVQ3 and HNC in Mechanical Engineering.


Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential-A2. Standard Grade / intermediate 2 (or national 5) Physics at level 2 or above, plus two other Standard Grades from English, Chemistry, Technological studies, Computing or Graphic Communications.


Desirable
B1. Evidence of interest in the science and technology field and mechanical engineering in particular.
B2. Higher, Intermediate 2 or National 5 in Physics, Electronics, Chemistry or English.


Skills

Essential
C1. Excellent communication skills.

C5. Some knowledge of Microsoft windows.

Experience

Essential
E1.

As this is a training post, no formal experience is required, although some experience in an engineering environment, perhaps at school would be relevant.

Must be able to demonstrate that you would benefit from both the work experience and qualification element of the programme.


Desirable
F1. Experience of using computers and in dealing with people from school activities, hobbies or volunteer/part-time work is desirable.
F2. Experience of working successfully under high levels of supervision.


Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 2, £21,400 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 3 years.
