Junior Clinical fellow in Critical Care


An exciting opportunity has arisen for motivated doctors to join our talented and hardworking team at Epsom & St Helier.

We are looking for trainees/fellows with
at least 6 month's to 1 year UK experience in relevant specialities like critical care, anaesthetic, surgery, general medicine or emergency medicine

These posts will require right to work in UK and current GMC registration

There will be an opportunity for juniors to participate in teaching sessions, audit and research activities. You will be well supported by our recently increased dedicated friendly ICU consultant team.

Fixed term 12 months in
Critical Care department (ICU and HDU) cross site (Epsom and St. Helier)
The main aim of the post is to enable the post holder to recognise potentially life-threatening
situations and equip them with the knowledge and skills to initiate immediate resuscitative measures. It will also train them in the appropriate use and interpretation of cardio-pulmonary monitoring.

Training will be competency-based, according to the recommendations of the InterCollegiate Board for training in Intensive Care Medicine and continuous assessment and 360 degree appraisals will also be employed.

There will be regular consultant-led teaching sessions
The junior clinical fellow will be supported at all times by the Consultants and also involves supervising junior fellows.

As per the experience and seniority the rota slot will be allocated either on the senior tier or junior tier.


Working for our organisation:

The Anaesthetic & Critical Care Department of Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS
Trust covers 2 critical care units plus a wide variety of elective, day case and emergency surgery
across two sites. The department is comprised of 32 consultants, 4 associate specialists, 9 staff grades, and 6 speciality doctors. A variable number of CT/ACCS and ST trainees rotate through the unit during the year.

In addition to providing cover for the two critical care units, the department covers the two obstetrics units and provides anaesthesia at both sites.

Emergency surgery for all specialities has been concentrated at St Helier Hospital, while the majority of the elective work is performed at Epsom General Hospital.

The critical care unit at St. Helier's has 22 beds, which can be used flexibly for level 2 and level 3 patients.

In addition, there are 2 step down beds, which are used for patients who are level 1 and ready to go to ward.

Currently 8 consultant intensivists and 16 junior doctors staff the unit. The unit is always staffed in the way that experienced trainee will supervise those who are new to ITU. The Anaesthetic & Critical Care department also covers a Level 2 facility at Epsom
Hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

The post has night on-call commitment based on a 1:8 rota, which will be based at St Helier Hospital, covering ICU and HDU.

There will be 2 junior doctors every night. In day time there will be minimum 4 junior doctors in the unit. The unit is always covered by a consultant intensivist,
who is on-site from 8 AM to 9 PM and then on-call (non-resident). Currently Epsom unit cover is only day time (8AM to 6PM) by critical care juniors. Night cover at Epsom will be provided by
Anaesthetics team.
