The RNOH Clinical Coding Department seeks to employ a Deputy Head of Clinical Coding to a permanent position. The post-holder is responsible for the leadership of the Clinical Coding team.

We are looking for an experienced individual to join our Specialised Orthopaedic Clinical Coding Team. The post holder must have an experience of coding and validation of complex and specialised orthopaedic surgical specialties and an excellent knowledge of National Clinical Coding Standards (ICD-10 and OPCS-4), HRG4+ and NHS financial flows based on codes and HRGs


The post holder will deliver the comprehensive coding validation programme under the supervision of the Head of Clinical Coding to achieve and maintain the highest possible quality of coded data and provide expert advice on clinical coding data aspects, coding inconsistencies, documentation issues and areas of under achievement to provide the Trust with a high quality clinical coding validation service.

The validation programme will extend across all specialties involving all clinical teams, using the ICD-10 and OPCS-4 Classifications and adhering to National and Local Clinical Coding Standards.

To manage and provide professional leadership of the Clinical Coding department and work closely with Head of Coding, Clinicians, General Managers and other Senior Managers to identify, analyse and address complex clinical coding issues

To manage the delivery of timely, accurate and highly complete clinical coding of activity for all specialities across the Trust

To develop effective communication and relations between clinical teams and the Coding department and improve the professional profile of clinical coding

To design and manage the delivery of a comprehensive quality assurance program along with Head of Coding

To collaborate with the Head of Coding on the strategic and operational leadership of the Clinical Coding department

To coordinate upgrades, develop or incorporate new technologies into the coding process as appropriate

To manage the development of the RNOH local clinical data classifications

To be responsible for the implementation of projects from a coding perspective

To deputise for the Head of Coding in dialogue on PROMs with the NHS England, GIRFT and the Specialist Orthopaedic Alliance (SOA)

To provide expertise and promote the Trust agenda in discussions surrounding national tariffs and their highly complex interactions with NHS England, Terminology and Classifications Delivery Service


The post holder will work as part of a friendly clinical coding team and will gain a detailed and comprehensive understanding of a wide range of specialised Orthopaedics activity.


The Clinical Coding department at RNOH relies on the extensive knowledge and expertise of the Clinical Coders to meet the highest levels of coded data quality.

The post holder will have an opportunity to work from home after successful completion of the probation period.


The RNOH provides very high quality specialised orthopaedics care, as shown in the Quality Accounts, the NHS Staff Survey and patient feedback such as the Friends and Family test.

Good quality coding is an essential part of the process and the RNOH Coding department provides this to support activity management and commissioning.

It also shares coding expertise with a range of organisations in the NHS to further the strategic aims of the RNOH and specialised orthopaedics providers in the NHS.

The range of highly specialised and innovative care provided at RNOH is a significant challenge for clinical classifications and commissioning.


Interpret, analyse and communicate critical and highly complex coding, casemix and PbR guidance information to support service redesign and development.


Deliver and manage documentation and presentations to provide education and updates, as well as highlight issues and make recommendations to consultants and management.


Advise on impacts of enhanced or new classification systems used as financial currencies such as Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs) in line with Payments by Results policy and Trust activity plans and contracts.


Identify and address coding, activity recording and governance issues (such as documentation) with the Head of Coding, clinicians and other senior managers as appropriate.


Develop and establish systems to increase the scope of the coded clinical data set in line with Payment by Results requirements.

Trust-wide responsibility for the adherence to National Clinical Coding Standards and best practice guidelines as set out by governing bodies such as The Terminology and Classifications Delivery Service


Trust-wide accountability for the clinical documentation requirements to support the collection of accurate clinical information, relied on for appropriate financial reimbursement.


Promote the clinical coding function, service and personnel across the Trust with clinical staff and management teams, as well as represent the Trust at external committees.
