Department of Health Sciences:
The Mental Health and Addiction Research Group wishes to appoint a mixed-methods Research Associate to work on a new National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Programme Development Grant.
Following translation of recruitment and intervention materials, we have been able to offer participation in the trial to individuals from South Asian communities who do not speak English and/or prefer communicating in Urdu.
We therefore require a mixed-methods Research Associate to join the new project "DIAMONDS URDU (Understanding
Reach and
Delivery in
Urdu)"
The post presents an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and highly motivated person to develop their own career in an excellent research environment.
In addition, excellent communication and problem-solving skills, an outstanding commitment to high quality work and attention to detail are essential.
Experience of working with South Asian community groups is advantageous.
Ideally, you will be able to work on-site at the University of York (Heslington West campus) at least one day per week.

You will be responsible for conducting quantitative and qualitative research.
This will involve supporting the recruitment of Urdu-speaking participants in the DIAMONDS RCT, the conduct of qualitative interviews (in Urdu and/or English) and focus groups (in English), the analysis of qualitative data (Urdu and English), and the assessment of intervention fidelity (in Urdu and English).
In addition, you will be summarising and analysing qualitative and quantitative data from session logs (in English). You will make critical contributions to project outputs in Urdu and English.Skills, Experience & Qualification needed:
- First degree in a health or social research related field (e.g. psychology, health sciences or similar)
- PhD (in Psychology, Health Sciences, Public Health or social science related field) or equivalent experience
- Fluent in Urdu (written and spoken) and ability to translate accurately between English and Urdu
- Knowledge of a range of mixedmethods research techniques and methodologies
- Excellent communication and problemsolving skills, and an outstanding commitment to high quality work and attention to detail
- Working knowledge of other South Asian languages and dialects, e.g. Punjabi, Mirpuri, and/or Bangladeshi is desirable.
