About the Role


In the capacity of a Silver Specialist, you will work as part of a team to appraise, research, catalogue, and market the material within this department.


This opportunity is ideally suited for individuals with a background in auction houses who thrive in collaborative environments, working alongside a tight-knit team to achieve shared objectives.


About the Department


Bonhams Silver Department holds auctions throughout the year(two standalone Silver sales), offering antique through to postwar and contemporary silver, with sales held at our two London salerooms, New Bond Street and Knightsbridge, as well as Edinburgh and Los Angeles.

Auctions regularly feature British, American and Continental silver, hollow-ware, flat-ware, and a wide variety of other themes to include objects of vertu, gold boxes and early spoons.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Business getting for the department to fulfil the budgets set for the department sales, and cataloguing of material for sale.
  • Work on strategies to encourage new business opportunities for the department.
  • To catalogue, value, and research incoming property efficiently and accurately for sale
  • Involvement in all aspects of catalogue production.
  • To assist with the photography of each item with inhouse photographers
  • To produce condition reports prior to sale.
  • Work closely with the department administrator on all aspects of work.
  • Maintaining and supporting the ongoing development of a database of customers both buyers and sellers for the department.
  • Maintaining contact with established collectors to encourage further business with the company, either as buyers or sellers.
  • Maintaining contact with established trade contacts to encourage further business with the company.
  • Assist with the production of advertising and marketing campaigns, to promote the business getting and sales activities of the department.
  • To satisfactorily complete, as and when required, the valuation of customer's property both in the office and at other venues within the UK and Europe.
  • Supporting the team to produce the catalogues to ensure timely delivery to printers.
  • Maintaining an awareness of our competitors' strategies to maintain the competitive position of this department in the market. Promoting the department through lectures and other promotional events.

Key Skills & Attributes

  • Good market and trend awareness
  • Degree holder or equivalent
  • A proven good level of specialist expertise
  • A keen interest in silver
  • Excellent research skills
  • Strong research background and ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Functional working knowledge of the whole auction process and related procedures.
  • Proven business acumen and valuation skills
  • A network of contacts (or) willingness to build up such a portfolio
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and oral
  • Able to work as part of team, and independently
  • Able to work to tight deadlines and under pressure Excellent attention to detail
