A primary school teaching assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the classroom teacher and enhancing the learning experience for young students, typically aged 4 to 11 years.
The job description can vary slightly depending on the school's specific needs, but generally, primary school teaching assistants are responsible for Special Education and Inclusion, Behaviour Management, Assessment and Progress Tracking, Classroom organisation, Communication, Extra-Curricular Activities, Safeguarding and Child Welfare.
A primary school teaching assistant plays a vital role in creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
They work closely with the classroom teacher, students, and other school staff to ensure a successful educational experience for all children.
Key responsibilities- Collaborate with classroom teachers to create a positive and engaging learning environment.
- Provide oneonone or small group support to students with varying learning needs.
- Assist in planning and organising instructional activities and materials.
- Foster positive behaviour and classroom management in accordance with school policies.
- Support students with special educational needs (SEN) and individualised education plans (IEPs).
- Administer assessments and track student progress under the guidance of the classroom teacher.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organised classroom.
- Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers regarding students' progress and any concerns.
- Participate in school events, field trips, and extracurricular activities as needed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's degree or relevant certification is a plus).
- Experience working with children, preferably in an educational setting.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with young learners.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Knowledge of classroom management techniques and strategies.
- Familiarity with special educational needs (SEN) and inclusion practices (desirable).
