About the role


About the role:


Sizewell A is a nuclear site that finished generating December 2006 and is in the decommissioning phase of its lifecycle.

Decommissioning efforts are increasing and there are several exciting projects currently underway, with more planned in the future.

We are aiming to recruit a number of Health Physics Surveyor Apprentices to be part of the upcoming exciting phases of works and to be part of the Magnox team.


  • On Sea, Essex.


On-site training and experience will be supplemented by formal off-site training to complete a Level 2 Nuclear Physics Monitor Apprenticeship, to enable progression towards becoming a competent Health Physics Surveyor.


What will I be doing?
The principles of radiological safety including the As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) principle

  • The fundamental principles of radiation types, sources, hazards, and appropriate control measures
  • Function test radiation monitoring instrumentation using calibrated radioactive sources
  • Use specialist radiation monitoring instrumentation to monitor for:
  • Surface and airborne radioactive contamination
  • Radiation dose rates
  • Personal radioactive contamination and how to respond accordingly
  • Characterisation of radioactive waste
  • Clearance of plant, equipment and samples
  • Undertaking radiation related work activities safely and competently
  • Communicate radiological protection information effectively, using a variety of communication methods in a timely, positive, challenging and professional manner.

What qualifications will I obtain:


  • Level 2 Nuclear Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship (ST0290)
  • Health Physics Monitoring in the Nuclear Industry (Theory) Level
  • Level 2 NVQ in Radiation Protection
  • IOSH Working Safely

Shortlisting Criteria:


  • A minimum of 3 GCSE passes at Level 4 (Grade C) or above including Maths, English and Science
  • Functional Skills Level will also be considered as equivalent to GCSE Level 4 (Grade C). (Other equivalent qualifications may be considered)
  • Good written communication skills as demonstrated in your CV and Covering Letter
  • An interest in science, engineering and technology and demonstrated in your Covering Letter
  • Able to use Microsoft Office / Office 365, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work using own initiative
  • Ability to follow instructions including technical instructions in English
  • Selfmotivated, willing to undertake the work required with the training provider and in the workplace
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Good problem solving skills.
